Q: Dear Master Lu, some people see golden light when reciting Buddhist sutras and mantras, some see green light, and some have reportedly seen a golden halo on top of your head when you give Dharma talks. Could you please explain this?

A:

The golden light is from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In many temples, there is a golden halo at the top of every statue of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It is great if you see the golden light when performing recitations, as it means you have seen Buddhas or Bodhisattvas.
Seeing green light indicates the presence of other spirits. In such cases, you would need to recite Little Houses for your karmic creditors. Green light could also be a sign of the presence of Dharma Protectors.

We never know the value of what we have

All men are equal. But what matters most is the foundation upon which such equality is built. In this world, there is no such thing as absolute equality. Superficially, it is very difficult to ensure that all men are equal. In fact, this notion of equality is established on the basis of our innate nature. Hence, it requires us to use our minds to strike a balance.

人人平等：這個平等建立在什麼基礎上非常重要。這世界上沒有絕對平等的事。從表面上來講很難做到人人平等。其實，這個平等是建立在原始心靈的基礎上，要用心來平衡。
Equanimity is acquired through cultivation, which requires us to learn to get around our mental blocks with wisdom. Regarding our society at large, it is evident that some people are very fortunate while others are miserable and impoverished. In a family, how much effort a husband or wife has put in for the family will, in effect, be the test of their equanimity.
平等心是要用後天的心理來調整和彌補，要學會用智慧來化解心理的障礙。比如：大到社會，有的人就很幸運，而有的人就很淒慘，貧困潦倒。小到家庭，在一個家裡，先生和太太付出的少或多，其實都是對平等心的考驗。

worried.

When we are free from afflictions,
our wisdom shines.

To test how deep the water is,
simply throw in a stone.
People who brag about themselves
are like a stone hitting shallow water;

Modest people are always silent,

學佛人要有自性，
否則就像一面牆，一推就倒。
As Buddhists, we have to constantly
maintain our “self-nature”,
or else we will be knocked down easily,
like a wall with no support.
