Last night, Barb and I stayed behind by moonlight, keeping watch, waiting for the grave digger to come back. It’s been an epic, fulfilling, challenging, and supremely beautiful process: supporting a family who chose a home death followed by a natural burial. Helping someone carry out their final wishes, especially when those wishes go against the conventional path, is such an honour. And no, hanging around a cemetery at night is definitely not creepy 👻

Christmas is one of those times of the year that not everyone looks forward to.
It can be triggering for some and brings up a lot of deep emotions.

We are thinking of all those families that will for the first time be dealing with an empty chair at the table and feeling a deep sense of loss and grief.

We encourage everyone to be kind, the world right now really needs more kindness.
Reach out to friends or family who may be doing it tough.

Thanks for all your lovely words and support over the past year, what a privilege it is to look after this wonderful cemetery
Merry Christmas 🎄

This is me with my amendment that just passed parliament.

We have officially legalised joint human and pet burials in Victoria.

It is set to become law soon.

For many of us, our pets are family. This change honours that bond and gives people the right to rest eternally beside their best friends.

I want to thank the community, the hundreds of cemetery managers, funeral directors, anthropologists, animal advocacy organisations and fellow colleagues who supported this change.

In particular, I want to thank my friend Deb Tranter from Oscar’s Law and Castlemaine Cemetery for her determined advocacy to fix this issue.

This is a victory for Victorians, their companion animals, and the love that connects them — which can now be honoured forever.
