Jesus is the reason for the season
One verse gives the whole reason for Christmas in a nutshell: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 NKJV). It is, perhaps, the greatest verse in the Bible—it explains the greatest love, the greatest sacrifice, the greatest offer, and the greatest gift.
The Greatest Love: “For God so loved the world . . .”
God didn’t just “love” the world. He “so loved the world.” His love for you is extravagant, intense, and lavish. No person will ever love you like he does. The Bible promises, “Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!” (Romans 8:39 CEV).
The Greatest Sacrifice: “. . . that He gave His only begotten Son . . .”
Giving is the essence of love. Jesus came to earth for many reasons, but the number-one reason was to give his life—to die for your sins. The Bible says it this way: “He is the payment for our sins, and not only for our sins, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2 GW).
The Greatest Offer: “. . . that whoever believes in Him should not perish . . .”
In Jesus, God has made an offer that you can’t afford to refuse. He offers you salvation! The Bible teaches, “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people” (Titus 2:11 NIV). No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what you’ve done, God offers you salvation—and all you have to do is believe.
The Greatest Gift: “. . . but have everlasting life.”
God wants to give you everlasting life. And when you accept that gift, you get your past forgiven, a purpose for living, and a home in heaven. The Message paraphrase says, “Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now!” (1 Peter 1:3-4).
This Christmas season, remember: God created you, sent his Son to die for you, and offers you the free gift of salvation—and it’s all because he “so loved” you!
