It’s better to stay quiet and have your teenagers think you’re an idiot than to open your mouth and say something they can text their friends.

I love this:

I’m convinced a big hang-up for people, especially millennials, is that religion is just a power trip - the Church trying to enforce its opinion on everyone else.

What if, in true religion, there is nothing coercive? Nothing authoritarian? What if it’s invitational? “Come, follow me. You can do what you want, but this cosmic invitation stands before all of humanity."

The rich young ruler asked, "Lord, what do I have to do?” Jesus told him, and the rich young ruler said, “Not sure I can go there.” What did Jesus do? Did he badger him? Coerce him, power up on him? No, he let him walk away. That ought to grab our attention! He lets us have our way until we come to the point of desiring him and his story.

Every day, God’s inviting us to respond to him, to be the bearer of an alternative possibility in this world, someone who’s living a different story. Our God really is a good, good Father. So good that, in a childlike way, we can approach him without fear of making a mistake or being wrong. God is a completely reliable covenant partner, and he’s completely devoted to humanity.
