For all who have loved ones at rest in the Castlemaine Cemetery...
“The work is guided by a single purpose: to find these people and return them to rest with the dignity they were denied.” - Nicci Foster
There is no denying that Castlemaine Cemetery has a tragic and distressing history.
Uncovering the desecration of thousands of historical graves across 3 sections of the cemetery has been challenging to say the least. We have ensured this practice has ceased and worked at protecting the remaining graves in these sections. In 2024 we unveiled our Pioneer Memorial Garden to acknowledge the mistakes of the past and ensure it never happens again.
I am pleased that today I can share with you all the next phase of this important project
Nicci Foster, Heritage consultant, has agreed to project manage the Burial Recovery Project pro bono.
Having an experienced person like Nicci lead the next phase of this project is invaluable, especially considering the sensitive nature of the work.
Nicci’s dedication and empathetic approach is evident when reading about this project on her website. Nicci has documented the history, known facts and details the different stages of the proposed archeological program.

Nicci has also organised a drop-in session for the community on Saturday 2 May, 10am–12pm at the Old Castlemaine Gaol. Come along and talk with Nicci and some of her team, ask questions, or share what you know. I along with other members of the cemetery trust will be there as well. Please RSVP via the online form here https://www.knowyourplace.au/CCBRP
I would like to thank everyone for all the support you have shown for the work we do in our beautiful cemetery, and hope you continue to support us as we navigate through this next phase of the project.
