St George's Anglican Church Carnarvon

Today we sadly said goodbye to long time member Bill Lyall. After trying his hand at banking Bill returned to his family's Stirling Plantation on North River Road which he inherited and made his own. Bill stored the first organ used at St George's for many years before it was returned to the church in 2023. A keen car enthusiast the cortege was led by Bill's beloved 1938 straight eight Buick and EH Holden. One of life's true gentlemen, Bill will be sadly missed. The family chose John 6:35-40 as the reading. The Rev'd Mike Welham explained that the passage tells us it is not enough to know of Christ. We must understand how Christ can transform our lives.

The start of August was celebrated with a burger brunch. The day was significant with the return of the Welham Family invigorated after spending time at the Bush Church Aid conference. Mike preached from Ezra and the account of the sixteen years the Israelites had to wait for a sympathetic Babalyonian king to permit construction of the Temple to recommence. A good reminder that God's plans happen in his time and he can use non believing leaders to achieve them. Vision Christian Media ambassadors Charles and Lwin gave a presentation on the services of the organisation. Since my last post Charles has found out that Vision previously applied for a transmitting licence in Carnarvon but it was rejected. Vision are going to apply again, so please pray that we will experience something similar to the account of the delay to the Temple construction that Mike preached on from Ezra. By Godincidence Mike's choice of first song was "Be Thou My Vision".

Sadly three years ago all three church air-conditioners died. We are very grateful to a donation from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous to enable us to replace one. The new unit is significantly more powerful than the over twenty year old unit it replaces. The new one also does heating which may not be required often in Carnarvon is good to have. The first time in St George's history to have heating! While air-conditioning may seem like a luxury, Carnarvon experienced a day of 50 degrees earlier this year so when it's needed, it's needed. There is also increasing community expectation that buildings will be air-conditioned. St George's is the only church in Carnarvon to feature air-conditioning. The Daiken unit was supplied by Norwest Refrigeration who always look after us and People's Warden Bob Lawer a retired sparky assisted with the instalation. Pictured to the right are Vivienne Lawer, Bob Lawer and Rector's Warden Jim Williams. To the left of the air-conditioner are visiting Vision Christian Media reprepresentatives Lwin Thida and Charles Samuels. Before retirement Charles was an air-conditioning specialist and gave the new unit the thumbs up. Vision Media's "Word For Today" is valued by many in the congregation as a great motivational for reading the Bible each day. Charles and Lwin will provide the congregation with resources for evangelism so more can hear God's word in air-conditioned comfort. We just need to push Charles for a date when Vision Media will install a transmitter for their radio station in Carnarvon!

June was celebrated with a burger brunch. We were pleased to have visitors from Perth Andrew and Angie join us. Noel received instruction in cooking burgers and took to it very well. Revd Mike Welham preached on Chapter 1 of Ezra, a book not often preached on. The story of the Israelites being reluctant to accept the offer to return home after being exiled in Babylon because they were settled and comfortable has relevance for us today as we consider if we are willing to step out of our comfort zone to be a witness for Christ?

We are blessed to have amongst our congregation talented artist and author Jessie Larman. Tonight Jessie welcomed guests to her latest art exhibition at the Carnarvon Library. Never missing an opportunity to profess her faith Jessie credited the Holy Spirit for leading her to subjects for her paintings. Jessie read an excerp from her autobiography about the decision she and her husband Pat made to purchase a banana plantation in Carnarvon despite not knowing anything about growing bananas! After the shock of their first shipment being rejected by the wholesaler and suffering ridicule from officers from the research station who they asked to tell them what they were doing wrong things then picked up! Jessie has stepped back from official duties at church but continues to be a dedicated prayer warrior. Giving Jessie's exhibition an A+ are Carnarvon Christian School Principal Stella Jinman (right) and Year Four teacher Julie Hanson (left).

May was welcomed with a shared brunch. Fortunately you can still enjoy being outside in the Carnarvon winter! The Revd Mike Welham preached on 1 Corinthians 15:35-49 with its encouraging message that we can be confident in the resurrection and be reminded that Jesus paid the ultimate price to redeem us

A special burger brunch today to give thanks for no damage to the church or other church buildings during Cyclone Narelle. Continuing our Easter theme Mike preached from 1 Corinthians 15 and the certainty we can have in the resurrection.

Praising God that Cyclone Mitchell passed Carnarvon without damaging the church buildings. We have a tree down and several branches littering the church yard so a big tidy up is ahead of us. Might need to send out a distress call to Geraldton Christian College to bring their annual visit forward! A tree also came down at the Rectory damaging a side fence and landing on the neighbours house. The State Emergency Service were called and attended promptly. When the SES saw the fence was made of asbestos they turned and ran! It was left to Rectors Warden Jim and his offsider David to give Mike, Zach and Ollie a hand to clear the tree, we didn't touch the fence either! We are grateful for the minimal damage to the church and town. Giving thanks to the man who calmed the storm.
