🎖️ Geoff Joy receives his OAM

Congratulations to Geoff Joy, who has officially received his Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) from Governor-General Sam Mostyn, recognising more than five decades of service to Catholic education.

A former Marist Brother, Geoff’s career included serving as Headmaster of St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill, before becoming Executive Director of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn from 1993 to 2006.

During those years, he oversaw significant growth in Catholic education across the Archdiocese, including the establishment and expansion of schools in Canberra, Goulburn and regional NSW.

But when Geoff learned he had been awarded the OAM in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours, he was quick to share the recognition.

“It’s a recognition of Catholic schools, actually,” he said. “I would say it was a recognition of Catholic education and what the schools have done for the nation.”

During his 14 years as Director, Geoff made an estimated 600 school visits across the Archdiocese, believing it was important for even the most distant school communities to maintain a strong connection with Catholic Education.

Archbishop Christopher Prowse described the OAM as public recognition of an extraordinary leader whose service had “shaped the nation for the good”.

Congratulations Geoff on a richly deserved honour and a remarkable contribution to Catholic education.

Beneath the soaring arches of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne, a moment five years in the making unfolded.
To the sacred music of the Cathedral Choir, bishops, clergy, military and government dignitaries, family and laity gathered for the episcopal ordination of Bishop Stuart Hall — the first bishop appointed to the Military Ordinariate of Australia after a five-year vacancy.

Among the Co-Consecrators was Archbishop Christopher Prowse, who has guided the Ordinariate as Apostolic Administrator during that time.

Bishop Hall paid tribute to Archbishop Prowse for leading “in a time of uncertainty” with “wisdom, stability and genuine pastoral care”.

The former Royal Australian Navy chaplain now takes up his new mission with a simple purpose: “to bring the peace of Christ to every corner of the Ordinariate.”

The Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn has gathered today for the next step on our journey of renewal, grounded in synodal evangelisation.

Under the theme "Sanctuaries for the Thirsty", more than 400 people — young and old — are participating in Canberra, across regional hubs in Cooma, Batehaven, Temora, Tumut, Goulburn and Bega, and online.

Opening the Assembly in Canberra, Archbishop Christopher Prowse offered three words to guide the day: "Be disciplined, be patient, be seeking.”

He encouraged participants to practise genuine Christian listening — not preparing what to say next or deciding whether they agreed, but, in the words of St Benedict, “listening with the ear of your heart.”

“Let’s all be patient through God’s pace, not my pace,” Archbishop Prowse said, urging participants to seek communal rather than simply personal discernment.

“It’s not all about me. It’s about God in me, God in us.”

Through Conversation in the Spirit, prayer and worship, and stories from our parishes, different generations and communities are listening together for where the Holy Spirit has been at work and discerning where we are being called next.

At the heart of the Assembly is a shared mission: helping people belong to the Church, deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and enter more fully into the life and mission of the Church.

Prayer, testimony, music and joy filled St Christopher’s Cathedral on Friday evening as Catholics and ecumenical leaders gathered for Witnesses of Hope on the eve of the Archdiocesan Assembly.

The beautiful voices of a choir drawn from Indonesian, African and Filipino communities brought the gathering to life, as Anglican, Greek Orthodox and Pentecostal leaders joined the Catholic community in prayer and fellowship.

The Reverend Dr Catherine Reid described the evening as “very prayerful” and full of joy, while Pastor Danny Gwynn praised the choirs singing as “just incredible”. Bishop Athenagoras said the gathering left him looking forward to more opportunities for Christians to come together.

Two young people, Ashleigh and Mose’, who were received into the Catholic Church at Easter, also shared their personal journeys of faith — offering moving reminders of the hope and joy that faith can bring.

It was a beautiful evening of prayer, shared faith and friendship, placing Christian unity and testimony at the heart of preparations for Saturday’s Archdiocesan Assembly.

Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn has launched a new seven-year Apostolic Action Plan, setting two 'bold goals' to shape Catholic education across the Archdiocese to 2033.

The day began with Mass before Executive Director David de Carvalho launched the plan, which commits Catholic schools to ensuring that "faith oxygenates every area of the curriculum" in every classroom, and to "achieving above-expected growth in literacy and numeracy across all schools."

“To be truly Catholic, everything that we teach is taught in a spirit of helping the students appreciate the wonder of God’s creation,” Mr de Carvalho said.

While staff gathered for the launch, about 1,000 students representing every Catholic primary and secondary school took part in a concurrent program exploring the theme “Grounded in Faith, Growing in Service” through a student panel, testimonies, music, drama and Eucharistic Adoration.

Archbishop Christopher Prowse described the plan as a seven-year vision and a response to the challenges facing education today.

The launch was followed by the annual gathering of Clergy, Principals, and Religious Education Coordinators.

Seven years of discernment culminated at a packed St Christopher’s Cathedral on Wednesday evening as Don Mauro Salvador Gomez was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate.

Surrounded by his wife Cerisse, daughters Dominique and Denisse, family, clergy and a strong Filipino community, Deacon Gomez said his call came from a simple desire: to serve.

The Filipino community brought a distinctive presence to the celebration, with a magnificent choir and special vestments made for all clergy taking part in the Ordination, including elaborate vestments for Archbishop Christopher Prowse and the Vicar General.

Deacon Gomez credited Cerisse with asking the hard questions throughout his journey, helping to “purify our intentions as a family”.

He said marriage and family would remain at the heart of his ministry, beginning with his own “domestic Church” before extending that service to the wider Church.

After a journey seven years in the making, Deacon Gomez left the congregation with a simple promise:
“Let me serve you.”
