Over the last few weeks our focus has been on bringing to our awareness the Christ who promise he would always be with us.

This week we ask what that means for our reading of the Bible by exploring an ancient technique known as the Lectio Divina--an approach intended to help the believer hear what God is saying to them, here and now, through the biblical text.

There are plenty of great online resources (just search for "Lectio Divina") but to get you started here is a brief summary which formed the basis of a brief introductory exercise during last Sunday's morning service.

We often look in the wrong place, and miss seeing what's important.

In Mark 12, Jesus draws his disciples' attention to a widow and in doing so they see what they'd missed.

Contemplative practice involves asking Jesus "show me what you see.”

In this week's blog, we discuss how contemplative practice results not only in personal growth, but in a church which shares Crhist's love with the whole world.

Did you know that the Philippines is made up of 7,641 islands? We didn't, but we learned this thanks to the visit of Sherwin Mariano.

Sherwin spoke to us about his own experience of growing up in extreme poverty in a Philippine shanty town. This experience led him to devote himself to helping children facing the same challenges -- often so poor they can't even afford a basic education.

Sherwin's organization, Vineyard Philippines, works together with International Needs to help raise children out of poverty through education. Something you can help with through child sponsorship.

Check out the International Needs website (https://ina.org.au/) to learn more about their work with women and children around the world.

The Book of Revelation is a strange one, or is it?

Perhaps the major problem is that we don't really know how to read it.

When we understand that it's primary intent is to bring the bibilcal story to a close, to show that all of God's promises will finally be fulfilled, then we start to get the idea.

Revelation isn’t some kind of speculative roadmap for the future, nor is it anything like a fantasy novel. Rather, it's a declaration that , in the end, God wins. And because God wins, we have every reason to hope.

The account of the anointing of 70 elders to assist Moses in leading the people of Israel has a couple of valuable lessons for us.

First, it reminds us that the gift of God's Holy Spirit is indispensable if we are to carry out the task to which God has called us.

Second, it reminds us that even with the Holy Spirit we never quite transcend either our human limitations nor our dependence on others.

Humility is key if we are to life as a community of Spirit anointed people dependent upon one another!

It's good to remember, and Psalm 1 reminds us of it, that true blessedness is a consequence of our commitment to follow the way of Christ.

So right at the start of the Book of Psalms -- a repository of some of the most profound prayers and worship ever collected -- we are reminded not to take the fervor of our worship as a sign of God's blessing.

Rather the question is: which way do I follow?
