Today's Gospel Matthew 18.10-20

Comment: The challenge of today’s gospel passage is to grow in the awareness that Christ is present both in us and in those around us. When we recognise that we, as Christians, are the presence of the risen Lord for one another, our words, actions, and choices begin to reflect that sacred truth, and reconciliation becomes not only possible, but a sign of God’s grace at work among us.

‘Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven. What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost. ‘If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.’

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 16:21-28

From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, ‘God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? ‘For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

COMMENT: Jesus teaches that the way to true life is through self-giving love: "Those who lose their life for my sake will find it."This remains one of the greatest challenges of Christian discipleship. Following Jesus does not mean seeking suffering for its own sake, but it does mean putting God's will before our own. Living by the values of the Gospel - showing forgiveness, humility, generosity, and love - will often place us at odds with the values of the world. Jesus assures us, however, that the way of the cross is also the way of resurrection. As we die to selfishness and follow him faithfully, God brings new life, deeper joy, and lasting hope. The life Christ offers is always worth the cost.

Spring is on its way!

'Living Generously' – there will be a sermon series on Sundays 6th, 13th and 20th September using a new diocesan resource. There will also be a linked study group at 4 pm for approximately 1 hour on Thursdays 3rd, 10th, & 17th September in the Family Centre.

This morning’s service was an absolute joy!
Bishop Ian joined us for 'Three Confirmations and a Baptism’ !
A great congregation, wonderful music and a scrumptious morning tea to follow.
Thank you to all concerned, especially to Bishop Ian and his wife being with us for one last time in his capacity as Anglican Bishop of Bunbury.

We look forward to welcoming Bishop Ian for a service of Baptism and Confirmation this Sunday, 23rd August, at 9.30 am in St. Mary’s Family Centre. This will be Bishop Ian’s last visit to our parish before he retires at the end of this month. Please note that there will not be an 8am service this Sunday. All are welcome.

Today's Gospel: Luke 2: 1-7

Introduction - Luke prompts the listener to compare and contrast the values, practices, and methods of the realm of God with those of Rome, and to want to choose the former.

'In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.'

Comment - As we celebrate Mary today, may we learn from her attentiveness, courage, humility, and hope. May we welcome Christ with open hearts, share his love in the world around us, stand with those who suffer, and join in Mary’s song of praise. Because God is still at work through ordinary people who trust him, and his mercy truly does last from generation to generation.
