Today is the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary — one of only three birthdays the entire Church marks on the liturgical calendar. The other two? John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.

That tells you everything about who Mary is.
She arrived in a world darkened by sin, sinless herself — the first light before the sunrise of Christ.

The Church has celebrated her birthday since at least the fifth century, rooted in the site tradition holds as her birthplace in Jerusalem.

He was the first pope to call himself “Servant of the Servants of God” — and he meant it.

Happy Feast Day, St. Monica. 🕯️

For seventeen years, she prayed, wept, and fasted for the conversion of her son Augustine — a man who had embraced heresy and wandered far from God.

She didn’t give up. She didn’t go quiet. She stormed heaven.

When she begged a bishop to intervene, he refused — Augustine wasn’t ready to listen. But seeing her unending tears, the bishop uttered words that have comforted parents for centuries: “It is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish.”

Monica received this as an answer from heaven — and kept praying.

Finally, the moment came when her tears of sorrow changed to tears of joy. Augustine was baptized.

That wayward son became one of the greatest saints and theologians the Church has ever known.

Monica’s greatest legacy is her example of persevering prayer and unwavering faith in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances.

She is the patron of the situation that looks hopeless. The prodigal who hasn’t come home yet. The loved one who keeps running. The prayer that feels like it’s disappearing into silence.

Monica reminds us: tears offered to God are never wasted.

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” — Matthew 16:17

One question. One answer. The entire hinge of human history.

When Jesus asks “Who do you say I am?”, He isn’t conducting a survey. He is inviting a declaration — one that costs everything and changes everything.

Peter doesn’t answer from scholarship or debate. Peter confesses what the crowd cannot see — that Jesus is not merely a prophet, but the Messiah and Son of God. And that confession wasn’t his own genius.

Jesus is clear: it was the Father in heaven who revealed it. Faith is not a human achievement. It is a divine gift.

Then comes the response that shakes the foundations of the earth:

“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.”

In this single passage, three realities are established at once: the divinity of Christ, the divine institution of the Church, and the primacy of Peter.

The foundation for the office of the Pope is found right here — and Peter held a preeminent position among the apostles from that moment forward.

And the keys?

The binding-and-loosing authority granted to Peter grounds the Catholic understanding that when the Pope defines dogma, he exercises a charism given uniquely to Peter’s office.

That authority did not end with Peter’s life — it was handed on to his successors.

Every Pope since is heir to that Rock.

St. Peter’s Basilica — hosting 80,000 in its square during papal masses — stands upon the tomb of Peter himself.

It is a visual echo of Christ’s promise: the gates of death will not prevail, and the Church He builds will endure.

And the gates of hell?

The promise that the gates of Hades will never prevail is the scriptural anchor for the Church’s indefectibility — she cannot be destroyed or ultimately corrupted.

This is not triumphalism. It is eschatological hope rooted in the Resurrection.

The question Jesus asked Peter, He asks you too — right now, today:

“But you — who do you say I am?”

Your answer to that question determines everything.

👑 Happy Feast of the Queenship of Mary!

“A great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars…” — Revelation 12:1

In the very moment Mary became a mother at the Annunciation, she also became a Queen.

The Archangel Gabriel announced that her Son would sit on “the throne of his ancestor David” and reign forever — and since in Israel the mother of a king was always a queen, Mary became Queen.

Celebrated eight days after the Assumption, this feast emphasizes Mary’s heavenly glorification and her coronation as Queen — the completion of her journey of faith, assumed body and soul into Heaven, now sharing in her Son’s victory.

As Queen, Mother Mary intercedes for us and acts as her Son’s mediator. From her heavenly throne, she is entrusted with God’s grace — not as its source, but as its privileged instrument of distribution.

As a mother, she lavishes every good thing upon her earthly children.

Vatican II stated unequivocally: “Mary was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the universe…” — Lumen Gentium, 59.

Hail, Holy Queen — Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. 🌹
