Over in Devonport, some of you may know that The Mission to Seafarers is only weeks away from reopening. Situated on Wharf West on the Mersey River it is the same side as where most of the merchant ships berth. (The famous Spirit of Tasmania berths on the East side).
Today, Sunday December 22, was a milestone for the Devonport unit - it delivered its first Christmas box, to the Tai Homage. After a brief greeting in Chinese ("Nǐ hǎo"), and an explanation in English, the crewman in the picture, with a very large smile, told of his appreciation and, aware of local customs, wished us a "Happy Christmas". In turn he was wished a Happy Chinese New Year (Jan 28).
So what's in a Christmas box?
Locally knitted beanies (It can be cold on the water), Sun Hats, Beverage Holders, Snack packs and chocolates, as well as some info about us.
Also included, In Chinese and English was the answer to "Why do we give gifts?"
Why do we give gifts?
