A Picnic to Remember - 1911

What did a church picnic look like 115 years ago? Well… it involved wagons, horses, races and plenty of food!

On 25 October 1911, the Bungendore Sunday School headed off to the shores of Lake George for a day of fun. More than 40 children and teachers squeezed into Mr Donohoe’s spring wagon, while another group travelled in Mr A. W. Daniel’s four-horse wagonette. Parents, friends and supporters followed behind in a procession of buggies.

There was plenty of food too! The local newspaper remarked that “country children at a picnic have full-sized appetites.”

Then came the games - three-legged races, sack races and running races - with referees and handicappers making sure everything was fair.

At 6:00 pm, the whole crew headed home. And were the children exhausted? Apparently not! They arrived back in Bungendore “in no way jaded”, singing all the way into town.

The newspaper said the day “will not be easily forgotten.”

Some things never change - community, good food, fun and fellowship!

The brass sanctuary lamp hanging in the sanctuary of St Philip’s today carries a remarkable story of faith, courage and service.

When Reverend Reginald Beaumont Dransfield became Rector of Bungendore in 1939, as the shadow of World War II was gathering, he established a rifle club for young men in the parish. Many local boys joined, including brothers George and Athol Gardiner and Stan Ryan. When war came, several enlisted — and remarkably, every young man from Dransfield’s rifle club survived the war and returned home.

Dransfield himself felt called to serve. He enlisted as an Army Chaplain and served alongside Australian troops during the gruelling Siege of Tobruk in North Africa.

During his wartime service, Dransfield acquired the heavy brass sanctuary lamp. He carried it with him through his journeys in the Middle East and North Africa, eventually bringing it home to Bungendore.

When he returned to St Philip’s in 1945, the lamp was placed in the sanctuary, where it remains today.

It stands as a quiet reminder of a remarkable parson, the young men he encouraged, and the many Australians who served far from home.
