On this day in 1847, the Diocese of Melbourne was first established. The building of the Catholic community here in Melbourne has been the patient work of the Holy Spirit, acting through so many named and unnamed saints – faithful lay women and men, clergy and religious. Through the years, the faithful of Melbourne have been generous not only with their money, gifts and resources, but with the way they have passed their faith onto their children.

Today we entrust the future of the Church in Melbourne to God, praying that our family of faith may continue to grow and flourish.

God has a habit of calling us out of our comfort zones. He certainly did with today’s saint, St Boniface, ‘apostle to the Germans’. In the seventh century, although Boniface was a skilled preacher and quite at home in England, he felt a calling to travel to Germany and bring the Gospel to the Germanic tribes. He has been called the greatest missionary since St Paul, such was his influence on the region.

St Boniface also features in a legend about the origins of Christmas trees. The story goes that when Boniface slew a giant oak tree in order to stop a child sacrifice to Thor, he planted a fir tree in its place and preached to the people about Jesus.

May we all have something of Boniface’s missionary spirit, and a willingness to follow God where he leads us. St Boniface, pray for us!

Happy anniversary, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli! On this day in 1992, at 28 years of age, the son of Michael and Margaret Comensoli was ordained to the priesthood at St John Vianney Church in Fairy Meadow. Dear Archbishop, thank you for responding to the Lord’s call with an emphatic ‘yes’, and for the generous service you have given the people of God throughout your years of priesthood. 🙏
