Santi Forest Monastery is a Buddhist education and meditation residence for nuns and laypeople (Monks are welcome to stay and practice at Santi only for short periods). Established by Bhante Sujato in 2003, it is set in the rugged bush ravines of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. Santi offers accommodation, teaching, and support for study and practice in the Forest Tradition,

with a special emphasis on the earliest teachings of the Buddha that are shared by all Buddhist traditions. Since 2005, the Sangha of Santi has performed ordinations and has become internationally recognized for its advocacy of full ordination for Buddhist nuns (Bhikkhunis). A Journey of Transformation: Empowering Buddhist Women in Sri Lanka
On 2nd of April 2025, two Buddhist nuns from Santi Forest Monastery, Australia, embark on the challenging Three Capes hike in Tasmania. It is not just a physical journey, but a deeply spiritual undertaking.
They walk to raise awareness and funds for a transformative project for Buddhist women in Sri Lanka.
Recognizing the lack of dedicated facilities and suitable opportunities for women in Sri Lanka to practice the spiritual path in alignment with the early teachings of the Buddha, Ajahn Brahmali spearheaded this project with the support of Ajahn Brahm. This initiative is affiliated with the Buddhist Society of Western Australia (BSWA). The project aims to build a training centre to:
• provide education and training based on the wisdom of early Buddhist texts.
• offer meditation instruction and create safe, tranquil spaces for women to practice.
• and present opportunities for nuns and women from the West to experience spiritual life in a traditional Buddhist country.
This hike is the first of many events dedicated to this cause. Stay tuned for updates and join us in making a difference in the lives of Buddhist women in Sri Lanka.

The Spirit of walking on Tudong
This hike is inspired by the ancient Tudong tradition — a practice where monks and nuns journey through the wilderness, renouncing material comforts to purify the mind, build resilience, and embrace the uncertainty of each day. While the nuns may not be following the traditional Tudong in its full sense, they are embodying its spirit: walking mindfully, embracing challenges, strengthening courage, and stepping forward with faith, determination, and deep commitment.
This is a spiritual hike that symbolizes perseverance, simplicity, patience, connection with the nature, and a dedication to both individual and collective transformation.

How You Can Help
All your donations will directly contribute to the building of this Buddhist training centre in Sri Lanka. We are grateful for any amount given, however small.
The estimated cost for the purchase of land and to build the centre is AUD 1 million.
Every step, every donation, makes a difference.

Join Us in Spirit
We will share updates here. You can also follow the journey in real time on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to witness their progress and challenges, and to learn how the Buddha’s teaching can be implemented in daily life and during walks such as this. There might be an opportunity for people to join future hikes. You can also join us to celebrate in a zoom event and blessings at the end of each hike.

Thank you so much for supporting this cause and for walking with us, in spirit and in action! One step at a time, we go on this collective journey together towards a future where there is more dedicated support and more places that empower women through learning, practise, and fully living as envisioned by the Buddha.
When the wish to give arises, notice it and experience the beneficial feeling of generosity and kindness as you make your gift.
May you be well and happy, and may your generosity and kindness bring you goodness, joy, wisdom, and peace 🙏
