It’s time to use our voices for GOOD! Balancing free speech, religion and public safety is important for a democratic country like Australia. Too far in any one direction leads to fear and hate or recriminations.
To get the balance right, more time is needed to fine-tune the quirks of the Australian Government’s ‘Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026’ - a position supported by legal academics, communities of faith, and members of Parliament and the general public.
WRITE TO YOUR FEDERAL MP and tell them your concerns about the ambiguity in this new bill. Around Bundaberg our Federal representatives are Mr David Batt MP (Hinkler) or Mr Colin Boyce MP (Flynn). If you’re reading this elsewhere, find your MP or Senator on the Parliamentary website: https://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/Parliamentarian_Search_Results?q=&mem=1&par=-1&gen=0&ps=0
Dear friends PLEASE ACT AND SHARE...
The Federal Government has released its draft Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill. We agree that legislation to combat antisemitism and racial hate is needed. However, this bill, as it currently stands, includes significant, perhaps unintended, risks to religious freedom.
The legislation was released on January 12, submissions were due on the 15th, and voting is expected on January 22. This timeframe does not make room for careful analysis of the legislation and its possible impacts.
Among the challenges with the bill is a new crime (punishable by 5 years prison) for “publicly promoting or inciting racial hatred”. The definition is so broad and ambiguous that it could capture legitimate debate.
This bill is set to be voted on in days. We are requesting that time be made for consultation in view of the best legislation.
There are TWO things you can do:
1. If you have a relationship with your local MP, please contact them to express your concern and ask them not to pass the bill at it stands.
2. Please write to your local MP asking them not to pass the bill in its current form.
This is a website to help you to write to your local MP.
