A prayer from Stephen:
God of mercy and truth,
As more details emerge this morning, our sorrow deepens.
We grieve the murder of sixteen people, including a child,
and the targeted violence against members of the Jewish community
who were gathering to celebrate Hanukkah—
a time meant for light, remembrance, and hope.
Lord, we lament this act of hatred and violence.
We name it for what it is: wrong, evil, and a profound wound
to those directly affected and to our whole society.
Our hearts ache for every life taken,
each one created in your image and deeply loved by you.
We pray especially for the Jewish community—
for families shattered by loss,
for congregations now gathering in fear and grief,
and for those who feel threatened simply for who they are.
May they know solidarity, protection, and care,
and may antisemitism find no home among us.
God, we lift before you the twenty-eight people injured
and now receiving care in hospitals.
Bring healing to their bodies, peace to their minds,
and endurance to all who are walking with them through this trauma.
Strengthen doctors, nurses, paramedics, and all first responders
who continue to serve with skill and compassion.
We also give thanks for courage shown in the midst of terror—
for the man who acted bravely to disarm one of the attackers,
placing himself in danger and, in doing so, saving many lives.
We thank you for such selfless courage,
a glimpse of light even in the darkest moment.
God of peace, we pray for calm across our communities today.
Still the spread of fear, anger, and speculation.
Guard us from hatred and retaliation.
Help leaders, authorities, and media to speak and act wisely,
and help us all to be people who slow down, listen, and care well.
Jesus, Prince of Peace,
teach us how to respond—not with indifference or despair,
but with compassion, courage, and a renewed commitment to love.
Where violence seeks to divide,
help us to stand together across faiths and backgrounds,
choosing dignity, justice, and peace.
Holy Spirit, comfort the grieving,
steady the anxious,
and strengthen us to be a calm and loving presence
in a shaken world.
We place all that we cannot comprehend into your hands,
trusting that light still shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
Amen.
