Saint Paul: Great Public Intellectual & The First Modern Man

Rowan Callick, on St Paul, who founded Christian theology, who travelled incessantly, establishing Christian communities in the face of the mighty Roman Empire, of shocked leaders of the Jewish faith that had nurtured him, and of contemporary thriving Greek cultures. His letters were the earliest books in the New Testament, written with a brilliance that shines as strongly today.

It was a blessing to have Archbishop Ric join us for Wednesday Eucharist this morning with his wife Louie! In the light of the 169th dedication festival coming up in a couple of weeks, he spoke about being grateful to those who have given life to CCB in the past, and Trusting God with the present opportunities, and joining with Jesus for the future mission of the Church!

Join us for a very special morning Mass this Wednesday at 10am- to be celebrated by Archbishop Ric Thorpe. This is a great privilege and a chance to meet Archbishop Ric in an informal setting after Mass. Previously he was the Bishop of Islington in the Diocese of London. He studied Chemical Engineering, and later, Theology, at the University of Oxford. He was the Church of England’s “Bishop for church plants" Ric was installed as Melbourne’s Archbishop last November.

This Sunday @ 6pm Bible & Beer is on at the Lamb & Flag cafe, 264 Sydney Road! Robyn White will look at a remarkable woman of faith - Saint Macrina of Cappadocia, the leader of a religious community, theologian & teacher. As the older sister of Sts Basil the great & Gregory of Nyssa, she inspired them, with their close friend Gregory Nazianzus, to clarify the Nicene faith and the doctrine of the Holy Spirit at Constantinople in 381, resulting in the wording of the creed we recite every Sunday! Light supper & fellowship to follow! All are welcome🙏

The Season of Creation: Healing our environment

Fr Harry Kerr, on the month ahead, concluding with the feast of St Francis of Assissi on October 4, that the churches set aside for honouring our common home, Planet Earth, for prayer and action on behalf of the environment. Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mulally says of the Season: “In Jesus’ incarnation, death and resurrection, God’s love is revealed not only for humanity but for the whole created order… It is an essential expression of Christian discipleship to strive to renew the life of the earth.”

Following the recent talk on Julian of Norwich, we warmly invite you to explore the inspiring story of another remarkable woman of faith and influence—Saint Macrina. This 4th-century Cappadocian nun, community leader, and theologian was the older sister of Saints Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa. Together with their close friend, Saint Gregory Nazianzus, these three esteemed Cappadocian fathers made a significant impact, particularly in the clarification of the Nicene faith at Constantinople in 381, and the creation of the Creed we recite every Sunday. Join us in discovering the profound legacy these Saints to our faith.

“All Shall be well” - Bible & Beer on Sunday the 16th August @ 6pm at the Lamb & Flag Cafe. 264 Sydney Road, Brunswick.
Anna Barker will present on Julian of Norwich - a 14th century female mystic who wrote the enduring masterpiece “Revelations of Divine Love” permeated with an optimism born of her confidence in God‘s love amidst a world in turmoil, ravaged by the black death. The great 20th century poet T S. Elliott Incorporated her insight, “ All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well,” into his famous four quartets.

The Christ Church Walking Group yesterday followed the steps of artist Noel Counihan and "Shorty" Patullo who, in 1933, challenged Police Commissioner Thomas Blamey's crackdown on political speeches in Phoenix Street - by making speeches inside a cage and from the top of a Sydney Road tram! The "Battle of Phoenix Street" is remembered in the memorial across the road from Christ Church, and the Noel Counihan art gallery.
