Bishop Tim Norton Bishop Tim Norton is the Bishop of Broome, Western Australia

Join Former Auxiliary Bishop Tim Norton SVD as he shares a reflection on the classic story of Jesus restoring sight to Bartimaeus, who was a blind beggar, on the side of the road: "If we ask Jesus to help us see what He wants us to see, are we ready to respond with unconditional discipleship like Bartimaeus? If Jesus helps me see the broken heart of the teenager who yelled at me, or the joint pain of the old man who is slow at the checkout, or the poverty of the woman on the bus who does not smell too good. Am I ready to love them anyway? Be careful if Jesus offers to make you see, because that inner sight of empathy and compassion can be very costly, but it will only make us better followers of Jesus." ❤️

I was recently honoured to join the St. Mary's Parish Coomera community, where I celebrated Mass for the Season of Creation and had the honour of blessing the new stained glass windows by The Lily Rose Room in the restored chapel. Additionally, I had the privilege of presenting the final instalment of the Synodality Speaker Series. It was truly a blessed day.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the Quo Vadis retreat at the Holy Spirit Seminary. This retreat, designed for young men discerning a vocation to the priesthood, brought together 19 participants from across Queensland. The weekend was marked by profound prayer, enriching fellowship, insightful talks, and a memorable bonfire with the seminarians. It was a deeply meaningful experience aimed at aiding these men in their discernment journey. I kindly ask for your prayers as they continue to seek and respond to God's call.

Recently, the Archdiocese of Brisbane Synod Members gathered with their families, friends, and communities for a Commissioning Mass. They were anointed with the "oil of gladness," marking a significant moment of joy, inclusion, and celebration. We invite you to continue praying for all participants of SYNOD24, that they may remain open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and respond with wisdom and faith.

During the last week of July we celebrated Queensland Catholic Education Week. Thank you St William's Grovely for the warm welcome. During my visit, I observed Year 3 students creating images of God inspired by Old Testament scriptures, walked through the labyrinth with Year 4 students, and had a fantastic interview session with Year 5 students. I also enjoyed lunch with the staff and shared some great stories. Thanks for having me!

The Sacrament of Confirmation imparts the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which empower those who are baptised to serve as witnesses and support the church’s mission. Last Sunday I had the privilege of administering this Sacrament at St James Catholic Church Coorparoo. The church, adorned with music and thoughtful decorations, spoke volumes with the presence of loved ones. I would like to extend my thanks everyone involved in making this a memorable day for the children. Come Holy Spirit!

I recently had a conversation with The Catholic Leader about the urgency of bringing God's mission to those who are excluded. I highlighted the dual paths of God's mission for the Church: an inward journey of renewing faith within ourselves and our communities, and an outward journey of extending Jesus' love to the world, including the marginalized and outcast. Both paths are interconnected because God is in both paths, with 'mission ad intra' nurturing us internally to prepare for 'mission ad extra' of reaching out to those in need.

The SYNOD24 journey continues with the first 'Commissioning of Synod Members' and the 'Synodality Speakers Series' held at Sacred Heart Catholic Parish Childers. I had the honour of presiding over the special Sunday Mass where we officially appointed Petra and Fr Jack Ho as Synod Members. As the Chair of SYNOD24, it was a privilege to lead this significant event. Congratulations to Petra and Fr Jack on their Commissioning and a big thank you to all parishioners and community members who attended the 'Synodality Speakers Series' despite the cold morning. Let us keep Petra and Fr Jack in our prayers as they embark on this very important role representing the parish community in Childers at SYNOD24.

This year, Catholics around Australia are being asked to reflect and support seafarers and all those who live and work at sea over two Sea Sundays, July 21 and July 28. Without seafarers, we would not have most of the items we rely on for daily living. Even during the pandemic, they continued to bring into our ports products that sustained our population and economy. So, I would like to invite you to pray for these hardworking individuals and those who assist them in Australian ports.

Concelebrating a Mass over the weekend, to commemorate 75 remarkable years of the Canossians sisters in Australia, alongside priests from the Passionist Community and the Indonesian community, was a truly humbling experience. We were also fortunate to have Sr. Josemary Keelath, Vicar General, with us, adding significance to the occasion.

As we reflect on the past 75 years of Canossians Australia's dedicated service in 17 communities across 5 States, let us join together in prayer for a future that continues to embody a meaningful and impactful Canossian presence in Australia. Congratulations to the sisters of Canossians Australia.
