For the past two days there was a mini-conference on how to reignite an Anglo-catholic ethos and movement within the diocese. There were some important observations and suggestions for parishes:
- Anglo-Catholicism is firstly a Christian evangelising movement whose aim is to make Christ known to all
- it is defined not by outward things like vestments but by a sacramental theology and ecclesiology. The realisation of this will have a diversity of expression.
- it is not esoteric but materialist - “Matter matters” was a quote recalled by the Dean
- We must move away from a mentality of insufficiency (what we can’t do) to one of capacity (what can we do OR what must we do to enable mission)
- we must cooperate and offer support and invitation across parish boundaries. The conference was a good start.
- Our church must be set up to create more clergy, support them and set them free for mission.
- We need church planting and parish renewal.
- The young people exploring the faith don’t want a simplified and watered down version of church life.
