// Romans 11:33-36

[33] Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

[34] “For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?”
[35] “Or who has given a gift to him
that he might be repaid?”

[36] For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Psalm 73:25-26

[25] Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
[26] My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

// BOAST IN THIS

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.” (ESV)

// HE DRANK THE CUP

Isaiah 51:22-23

[22] Thus says your Lord, the LORD,
your God who pleads the cause of his people:
“Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering;
the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
[23] and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
who have said to you,
‘Bow down, that we may pass over’;
and you have made your back like the ground
and like the street for them to pass over.”

// THE BEGINNING OF THE GOSPEL

The idea behind the word ‘gospel’ is good news, not just any news, but we-interrupt-this-program good news. It’s the type of news that we ought to stop what we are doing and pay attention to this news.

There are all sorts of different ’gospels’ - but there is one gospel of gospels… it is the good news concerning Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Of the four biographies written about Jesus - The Gospel According to Mark - is the fast-paced, action-packed, no holds barred version. He gets straight to the point.

THIS is the gospel. It’s about Jesus the Messiah. Listen up.

For those tracking along with the reading plan - today we arrived at Mark’s gospel. I’m excited to be here!

Perhaps you don’t have a bible reading plan, or maybe you started one and kinda gave up on it a few weeks ago.

// THE TWO GOATS

Leviticus describes all sorts of blood sacrifices that God’s people needed to make for sin. It taught them that sin was serious and that God was gracious.

In Leviticus 16, we learn about a yearly feast called the Day of Atonement. It was a day when God would forgive Israel’s sins because his righteous anger was turned aside from them and placed upon innocent animals.

Of all the ceremonies that happened that day, the focal point was on two goats.

The High Priest would stab the first goat, slit its throat, and blood would pour out. The goat was sacrificed in place of Israel, taking the penalty for their sin.

The second goat was called the scapegoat. The High Priest placed his hands on its head and confessed the sin of Israel upon it. Their sin would transfer to the scapegoat, and then the goat was led out into the wilderness. This symbolised the taking away of sin and the cleansing of the people.

Ultimately, the Day of Atonement rituals pointed forward to Jesus.

Jesus is a better High Priest than those in the Old Testament, as they had to offer sacrifices for their sins before they could sacrifice for the people's sins. Jesus is innocent; not only does he offer the sacrifice, but he IS the sacrifice for sin!

At the cross, Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. As Jesus’ blood was shed, like that first goat, He died in our place and for our sin.

Like that second goat, it’s as if our hands were metaphorically placed upon Jesus’ head at the cross. Our sin, guilt, shame and punishment were transferred to him and taken away.

At the cross, God turns his anger at our sin away from us as Jesus willingly takes it upon himself. It’s only through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross that our sin is atoned for and that God can forgive us.

Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient once and for all; He rose from the dead to prove it, meaning no further sacrifices are needed to atone for sin and bring reconciliation.

That is the best news ever for all who trust in Christ!

February 13 readings: Leviticus 15-17; Matthew 27:1-31.
