Reflection - Steadfast Love

As a minister it’s really easy to get so tied up in the church and other people’s spiritual needs that we can neglect our own. There are ways to prioritise our own faith growth, and one of mine is to have regular sessions of spiritual direction. Often the question is, “Where has God been in this situation?” A deeper one might be, “What kind of God do you believe in?”

The kind of God we believe in shapes so much of our lives, whether we recognise it or not. How we read the Bible, interpret books, interact with others, see ourselves and what roles we might pursue in life. The answer to this question can be the lens through which we look at life. If unexamined we can have a distorted image of God, and therefore become images of that distorted image. Like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy the crispness disappears, odd marks show up, the darks become blotchy and lighter, whites less pristine. Measurements off a photocopied plan will be wrong. We can become much less than the people God made us to be.

So many times I’ve heard people refer to the New Testament as describing God’s love and the Old Testament as being one of judgement. Yet the word ‘hesed’, God’s steadfast love, is repeated many times in the Old Testament. Whether translated ‘faithful care’, ‘lovingkindness’, Goodness’, or ‘unfailing love’ there is a sense of the rock steady, unconditional, ever-present care, kindness and love of God for the whole world.

How might we read the Old Testament if we started from “My God is steadfast love”?

Today marks Mabo Day, and the close of National Reconciliation Week.

On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia made the historic Mabo decision, recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have longstanding rights to their land.

This decision overturned the myth of terra nullius and changed the course of Australia’s history.

Mabo Day honours Eddie Koiki Mabo and all those who fought for justice, truth, and recognition.

As Reconciliation Week comes to a close, we’re reminded that reconciliation doesn’t end here.

It continues in our actions, our relationships, and our commitment to walking together.

🤝 Reconciliation is a journey — and we all have a role to play.

Reflection for Trinity Sunday
Inspired by the Gospel of Matthew 28:16-20 NRSVUE
The Commissioning of the Disciples

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Trinity Sunday asks us to remember humbly an ancient truth, that we are called into relationship with the one most high God, through our relationships with each other. In Aboriginal missiology, we begin not with abstract notions of who God is, but with creation, relationship, story, place, and belonging. Our Triune God is not distant from creation but present within it, around it, and sustaining it. Creator, Christ, and Spirit are known in the deep connectedness of life: in Country that holds memory, in community that shapes identity, and in Spirit that breathes through all that lives. The mystery of the Trinity reminds us that God’s life is endlessly relational, and that relationship itself is to be viewed as sacred.

From an Aboriginal missiological perspective, discipling peoples through mission is not conquest, control, or the erasure of culture. Instead, the Trinity reveals a different way.

Online Renewal Prayer

Viewing the night sky, the expanse of time and place are unfathomable. A universe beyond our understanding and comprehension. A reminder of a God who creates, inhabits, sustains and renews all.

A God who would take the form of humanity to reveal to us the way of life and call us to discover it in all its complexity, and share it with others.

Join us tonight as we gather in prayer online, from 7-730pm (Qld time), as we reach out to God and ask to know more of the mystery of God and be strengthened to walk the way of life, for our restoration and the renewing of the world, as we join God's work of the restoration of all things.

"For the Uniting Church, this week sits deeply within our covenant relationship with the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress and our ongoing commitment to justice for First Peoples. It is also grounded in our faith - in the reconciling love of Christ who continually calls us towards healing, truth and right relationship." - Moderator Rev Bruce Moore & Kym Korbe - Executive Officer, UAICC & Covenanting. Today is National Sorry Day - a day to honour the strength, truth and lived experiences of Stolen Generations survivors and their families. Its timing - the day before National Reconciliation Week - reflects a deep truth: that before we move forward, we must own the past.

Tomorrow begins National Reconciliation Week 2026 with the theme 'ALL IN FOR RECONCILIATION'. Our UAICC and Covenanting team have put together a brilliant resource for the whole Church, available for download here - https://ow.ly/hLtB50Z448u

We encourage everyone to be ALL IN FOR RECONCILIATION this National Reconciliation Week and find how you can play your part!

What a gift it has been to experience the extraordinary welcome, hospitality and worship at the 29th Assembly of the EKT Church and the people of Tuvalu as part of the delegation that has travelled with the UCA President and Moderators from Qld & NSW/ACT Synods. To stand in Tuvalu is to stand in a place of breathtaking beauty and profound vulnerability. Rising sea levels and climate change are not abstract conversations here — they are realities lived, prayed through, and carried daily by communities of deep faith.

And yet, amid those tensions and uncertainties, what shines so powerfully is the resilience, joy, culture, and hope of the Tuvaluan people.

I have been deeply moved by the beauty of Tuvaluan identity — the strength of family, the care for one another, the singing, the laughter, the hospitality, and the way community is woven into everyday life.

The New Testament word koinonia speaks of fellowship, shared life, belonging, and responsibility for one another. Here in Tuvalu, koinonia is not simply a theological idea — it is lived reality.

The church here reminds us that we truly belong to one another.
That faith is communal. That the Gospel is embodied in relationships of love, care, and mutual responsibility.

In a world that can become fragmented and individualistic, the witness of the people of Tuvalu speaks powerfully to the wider church.

Thank you for reminding us what it means to live together as the body of Christ.
Thank you for your friendship.
Thank you for your witness.
And may the Holy Spirit continue to strengthen and sustain the people of Tuvalu for generations to come.

Veni Sancte Spiritus.
Come Holy Spirit.

Reflection: The First Multi-National Church in Antioch

A few years back at Northside Mackay we did an almost week-by-week study of the Book of Acts on Sunday mornings, and it was a fascinating journey taking that much time over it.

Of course it began with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in chapter 2; for us it can seem like the culmination of the gospel story, but for them it was more like the start. What fascinated me this time around was the realisation that all those visitors who turned to Jesus that day went home and took the gospel with them.

But the real stopper for me was in Acts 11:20-26:

"Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch..."

Over 2000 years ago, in an upper room in Jerusalem, 120 people gathered in unity, seeking God. They didn't know what it would look like when Jesus' promise that he would send the Comforter was fulfilled. But the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in that upper room, replete with signs and wonders, and followed by the powerful preaching of the Word that birthed the church, left them with no doubt that Jesus' promise of power had arrived. And since then, the Spirit has been at work in and through God's people around the world.
Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is our heritage shared with every believer, and so we join with the ageless prayer of believers for centuries and ask - Come, Holy Spirit.
