It is with great pride and great tenderness that we share some wonderful news.
The late Helen Gregory (1963) has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours, for service to community history. Awarded posthumously, this recognition honours a life devoted to preserving the stories of Queensland for generations to come.
Helen was the founder of the Brisbane History Group and the Professional Historians' Association of Queensland, believed to have been the first graduate historian in Queensland to work as a consultant historian in the private and government sectors, demonstrating that privately commissioned histories could be undertaken without sacrificing academic standards or ethical integrity.
She became the first Chair of the Queensland Heritage Council in 1992, and subsequently the first woman appointed to a senior executive position in the Queensland Government's Environment and Heritage department as Director of Cultural Heritage.
A former adjunct professor at the University of Queensland, Helen authored many commissioned histories spanning hospitals, institutions and communities across Queensland each one a gift to the people whose stories she told.
She passed away in October 2025, but her contribution to Queensland's story and to our understanding of who we are will endure.
We send our deepest congratulations to Helen's family. What a legacy.
