CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS: NATIVITY SCENES

The tradition of Nativity scenes originated with St. Francis of Assisi in 1223. He created the first live Nativity in Greccio, Italy, using people and animals to reenact the birth of Christ. This was intended to make the story of Jesus' birth more tangible and accessible, emphasizing the humility of the Incarnation.

Over time, Nativity scenes spread throughout Europe, evolving into static displays made of wood, clay, or other materials. Artisans in countries like Italy, Spain, and Germany became renowned for their intricately crafted figurines, depicting not only the Holy Family but also shepherds, angels, Magi, and animals.

Today, Nativity scenes are central to Christmas celebrations worldwide. They range from simple home displays to elaborate public installations. Modern variations include life-size outdoor displays, "living Nativity" reenactments, and digital or animated versions. Nativity scenes remain a powerful reminder of the spiritual significance of Christmas, celebrating Christ's humble birth and God's gift of salvation.
