✨ A Pilgrimage of Steps, Stories & Sacred Moments ✨

“The good news: the pilgrimage is complete. The better news: the stories continue.”

Over the past few weeks, many of you have followed along as Fr Anthony walked the Via Francigena - a pilgrimage journey filled with history, faith, friendship, challenge, and countless moments of reflection.

Across this incredible journey, Fr Anthony travelled:

🥾 563.57 kilometres
👣 910,820 steps
⛰️ 1,116 flights of stairs

…which is a wonderful reminder that pilgrimages are measured not only in distance, but in the moments, encounters, and stories gathered along the way.

From ancient pathways and beautiful places, to unexpected conversations (including meeting fellow Cathedral parishioner Marianne Hansen along the route!), Fr Anthony has captured the journey through reflections, photos, videos, and some wonderful interview-style conversations with his travelling companions.

If you haven’t yet explored his travel blog, now is the perfect time to catch up - you may find yourself inspired, entertained, and perhaps even feeling like you’ve walked a few kilometres alongside him (without the blisters!). 😊

**Next Steps 2026: Via Francigena & Beyond - A Pilgrimage Completed**

After 20 days, hundreds of kilometres, countless footsteps, changing landscapes, ancient villages, unexpected encounters, and stories layered through centuries - the Via Francigena journey has come to an end.

Beginning in Tuscany and finishing in Rome, this pilgrimage followed the ancient road once travelled by Archbishop Sigeric in the 10th century as he journeyed to receive his Pallium from Pope John XV.

Along the way came rain and sunshine, medieval hilltop towns, forgotten churches, sacred art, local traditions, ancient stories of faith, resilience, suffering, hope - and the simple hospitality found along the road.

But beyond the history and geography, this pilgrimage became a reflection on something much deeper: the meaning of journey itself.

As Fr Anthony reflects, walking asks us to slow down, to notice, to encounter the world differently - to understand that destinations are not simply endings, but moments along a much greater path.

A special highlight was an unexpected meeting with Cathedral parishioner Marianne Hansen, also walking the Via Francigena - a reminder that pilgrimages have always been about connection, community and shared stories.

The final steps led into Rome, along the ancient roads of the Appian Way, finishing at St Peter’s Basilica where Fr Anthony received his pilgrim Testimonium.

Thank you for following this extraordinary journey. The reflections, stories and videos from the Via Francigena will remain available as a reminder that every road we walk has something to teach us.

“The path is more important than the next stop.”
- Fr Anthony Mellor

**The road continues...**

For those who have been following Fr Anthony's journey along the ancient Via Francigena, several new reflections, videos and stories have recently been added to the travel blog.

The latest chapters trace his path through Radicofani, Acquapendente, Bolsena, Viterbo and beyond, following in the footsteps of Archbishop Sigeric more than a thousand years after his historic journey between Canterbury and Rome. Along the way are encounters with medieval towns, sacred art, centuries-old pilgrimage traditions, and the enduring landscapes that have guided travellers for generations.

Among the more unexpected moments was a chance meeting near Campagnano di Roma with Cathedral parishioner **Marianne Hansen** - a reminder that pilgrimage is often as much about people as places.

Fr Anthony has also begun sharing a series of short video conversations and reflections with some of his fellow travellers and companions on the road, offering a personal glimpse into the joys, challenges and friendships that emerge through pilgrimage.

What continues to emerge from these reflections is that pilgrimage is not simply movement across a map. It is an invitation to see more carefully, to listen more attentively, and to discover how history, faith and human experience remain deeply intertwined.

As the journey draws closer to Rome, the reflections become less about the destination and more about what the road itself has revealed.

We invite you to explore the newest videos and entries on Fr Anthony's Travel Blog and continue walking this remarkable journey with him.

**A pilgrimage where every step through ancient landscapes becomes a quiet encounter with time, memory, and meaning.**

**Next Steps 2026: Via Francigena and Beyond**

This is not simply a walk along the ancient Via Francigena, but a living journey through history, landscape, and memory. From the eternal city of Rome into hilltop towns, medieval villages, and quiet valleys, each step reveals layers of story - of saints and travellers, of art and endurance, of faith expressed in both silence and struggle.

Along the way, the path becomes more than geography. It becomes reflection: on time, on place, on change, and on what it means to keep walking when the destination is never quite as fixed as it first appears.

Rooted in centuries of pilgrimage yet shaped by present-day experience, this is a journey of attention - where the sacred is found not only in cathedrals and relics, but in rain-soaked tracks, roadside chapels, and fleeting moments of grace.

**A modern pilgrimage through an ancient world - where every step tells a story, and every story becomes a way forward.**
