Valentine's Day is named after St Valentine, a third-century Roman priest who went to great lengths to secretly marry the emperor's soldiers for whom marriage was forbidden.
But did you know Valentine's Day was appointed to supplant the pagan festival of Lupercalia?
February 14 was traditionally the Roman festival of Lupercalia, an important day to honour Juno, the Queen of Heaven and protector of women.
Juno was said to bestow her blessing on courtship rituals or marriages celebrated that day.
