Congratulations LOL 64 Sons & Daughters of Ulster located in Perth Western Australia.

Great to see the continued growth in membership in WA. Keep up the good work brethren and sisters.

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the first decisive victory for the American revolutionaries in the Revolutionary War. At Moore’s Creek Bridge, northwest of Wilmington, North Carolina, around 1,000 American militiamen stood in the way of about 800 Loyalists marching towards Wilmington to connect with a force of British regulars. The American victory resulted in the capture of a majority of the Loyalists and the tamping down of loyalist fervor in the region.

A pastel portrait in our collections, painted in 1786, depicts Donald MacDonald wearing the uniform of the Royal Highland Emigrants, a provincial Loyalist unit that he joined in 1775. MacDonald, who settled in America after serving with the British Army during the Seven Years’ War, was ordered to North Carolina in late 1775, where the royal governor gave him the local rank of brigadier general and command of all Loyalist forces in the colony. MacDonald had been tasked with recruiting men, particularly his fellow Scots, to the Loyalist force. He was captured at Moore’s Creek Bridge and imprisoned in Halifax, North Carolina, and Philadelphia until his exchange in fall 1776.

Starting tomorrow, February 28, you can see this portrait on view alongside more than 40 other objects in our new exhibition, Voices of Revolution.

A chilling story of Republican equality and shared respect in country Cork. Don’t be fooled .

Martin Corry was a Fianna Fail TD for 40 years. Many men — and it is impossible to say what number — were murdered and buried at Corry’s farm, county Cork, after being imprisoned in a nearby vault in Kilquane graveyard, which Corry called Sing Sing.

As TD in the 1930s, he even jeered at James Dillon TD in Dail Eireann: 'Come down and I will show you. I will show you a lot of things you never saw before. I would nearly show you Sing Sing. I am sure the Deputy would have to be very fascinating before he’d get out of it.'

On St Patrick’s Night in 1922, six members of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Cork were abducted and executed at Corry’s farm. That same week, half a dozen loyalist farmers were similarly disappeared in west Cork.

Overall, from the summer of 1920 to the start of the Irish Civil War, 33 Protestants were shot in Cork city proper, while another 40 were killed nearby — a total of 73 Protestant victims from a small minority community. From around 1921, IRA units murdered or 'disappeared' at least 85 civilians. Some 26 were killed after the Truce.

A farmer bought some of Corry’s land in the 1960s and dug up several skeletons in a mass grave. These were handed over to the local gardai at Watergrasshill, after which they vanished without trace.

Chilling tapes of Corry chuckling about torturing, executing and secretly burying suspected spies during the Irish War of Independence were aired in a 2013 television documentary.

The tapes revealed how he relished his role as chief IRA executioner in the medieval torture vault named Sing Sing.

During the programme 'In the Name of the Republic,' Corry is heard recalling capturing, killing, and burying countless bodies in a nearby bog known as The Rea.
