This Sunday is Trinity Sunday. The Holy Trinity, short– hand for
saying the Divine union and oneness between the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit is something we often don’t have occasion to think upon in our daily lives. It seems that the notions of God being three distinct persons sharing one essence is frankly a little lofty, hard to
understand, and difficult to relate to in a world of high petrol prices
and rents. In fact one has to ask why was it so important to the early Church that so much time was given to making sense of it. Firstly, if you have ever read the Bible, which I hope you have, you will have noticed God referred to by all those names, for example when Jesus talks about going away and sending the Holy Spirit. To make sense of how the Bible talks about Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit all as though they are God we needed the theology Trinity to make sense of it. Secondly, what seem like abstract debates to us now were actually about preventing people from being mislead by cults and sects – often the misrepresentation of one or more aspect of God’s Triune character leads to actual abuse and mistreatment of people. In fact one reason God is so opposed to the worship of idols in the Old Testament is not a petty need for worship but rather to protect people from worshipping gods who promoted the mistreatment of the poor widows and orphans. The Bible tells us we are made in the image of God, and we know that we are made in the Image of God three-in-one, whose presence is defined by mutual relationship and love. This means that if we are to fulfil our destiny as image bearers we too need to make our
lives Trinitarian – living as though love and relationship are the most important thing – which is about as far from lofty and abstract as you can get.
