Today, I mark my first anniversary as Archbishop of Brisbane. These first twelve months in the Archdiocese have been rich and rewarding for me. I am very grateful for the warm and generous welcome I have received since arriving here. Taking up a ministry in a new state has brought a range of challenges for me: adjusting to the rhythms (and weather!) of a new place, getting to know parishes, schools, ministries and people. Of course, my arrival has also involved adjustment for everyone in the Archdiocese, in receiving someone from elsewhere into the life and leadership of this local Church. I have appreciated the patience and encouragement that so many people have offered me over this time. I have enjoyed having an opportunity to visit many parishes, schools and ministries around the Archdiocese, though I am very aware of how many more I am yet to visit! In each place, I have seen great faith, commitment and hospitality in the people I have met. Earlier this week, I also celebrated the thirty-fifth anniversary of my ordination as a priest. I am grateful for the many blessings of my journey to this point, and I look forward with anticipation and hope to the coming years here in Brisbane.

Teresa dedicated her life to returning dignity to those of the lowest caste, the poor, lepers, those with AIDS, the dying and those enslaved by sin, addiction or anything else that degrades the human spirit.

Teresa could honestly say: “I see God in every human being. When I wash the leper’s wounds I am nursing the Lord himself”.

As she said in her Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1979, so we might hear her speak from the heavenly altar: “Holiness is not the luxury of the few: it is the simple duty for you and for me”. Saint Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!

In our Catholic tradition, the doctrine of the Theotokos, came from our reasoning that if Jesus is God, and Mary is Jesus’ mother, then Mary is Mother of God. So too, it was reasoned, if Jesus is King and Mary is His mother, Mary is Queen Mother.

In his apostolic exhortation, Marialis Cultus, St Paul VI refers to Mary as “one of our race, a true daughter of Eve (though free of that mother’s sin), truly our sister, a poor and humble woman who fully shared our lot”.

Hers really is a case of God “casting the mighty from the thrones and raising the lowly”. And the favourites of both Mother and Son were not the kings of the earth but the poor and downtrodden. Mary Queen of Heaven and Earth, pray for us!
