Or Chadash Synagogue - Sydney

We are a Modern Orthodox synagogue in Sydney, Australia. We are an inclusive and welcoming community and aim to be open-minded within halacha.

Or Chadash was founded in 1995 as a young adults minyan. We have since grown into a shul with members from a variety of backgrounds and a passion for Modern Orthodoxy. We are an inclusive and welcoming community and aim to be progressive within halacha - 'where there is a halachic will, there is a halachic way'. We are proud to have held the first mixed Kohelet reading in Sydney in 2013 following

the psakim of four prominent rabbis. The Sydney Women's Tefillah Group often joins Or Chadash for part of our services before separating for their women's service. Our services are nusach Ashkenaz, using the Koren and RCA Artscroll siddurim, and are full of song.

We recently celebrated our 7th graduating cohort of the Matan Bat Mitzvah program, with each girl presenting about an inspiring Jewish woman of their choice and plenty of sweet treats 🧁🍓 The program is focused on strong Jewish women through history and combines text learning with craft and drama to develop creativity and critical thinking. Based on materials from the Matan Institute in Jerusalem, the program centres the stories of 12+ strong Jewish women who made a difference, from Biblical times until today. Through text learning, craft and drama, the program develops your daughter's critical thinking and connection to Jewish values. And it's heaps of fun!

We're pleased to have Rabba Dr Lindsey Taylor-Guthartz back at OC this coming Shabbat morning, 22 June. She will be speaking on "Midrashic Heroine: Serach bat Asher".

Rabba Dr Lindsey – who has been in Sydney as a guest of Limmud Oz Sydney – is a teacher, translator and thought leader who believes that Jewish text is for everyone. She received Orthodox ordination from Yeshivat Maharat (2021) and is a co-founder of Azara, a grass-roots learning initiative in the UK.
