"I stand with great joy amongst you this evening and thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm reception. This is not just a reception for me as a person, but a sign of your dedication to your Holy Church, respect to your spiritual fathers and to the dignity of the Holy throne of Antioch, which you cherish the relationship with", spoke His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II in a spectacular reception organised on 2nd November 2017 by the members of 3 Malayalee congregations in Sydney - St Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, St George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church and St Mary's Knanaya Syrian Church on the occasion of the Patriarch's first Holy Apostolic visit to Australia.
Bowman Hall in Blacktown saw hundreds of faithful bowing their heads and folding their hands in prayer, for having been given a lifetime's opportunity to be blessed by the Patriarch and listen to his kind words. His Eminence Mor Malatius Malki Malki, Patriarchal Vicar in Australia & New Zealand, Very Rev Fr Zeki Zitoun Corespiscopa and other delegates from the Syrian community also attended the reception. The priests Fr Geevarghese Kuzhiyelil, Fr Dr James Thodattil, Fr Joseph Kunnappillil and Fr Varghese Paul Thombra spoke on behalf of the Jacobite Syrian Christian community of Sydney.
Sunday school children dressed in white lined the path, holding candles and Patriarchal flags in their little hands as the Spiritual father arrived at the venue. The choir sang beautiful hymns to welcome the Holy Father to the hall that was stunningly set up for the Patriarch; creating an ethereal feeling for everyone that attended.
After the reception, His Holiness presided over a short prayer at St. Mary's Church Sydney. At the end of the prayer, His Holiness revealed a plaque commemorating the visit and also blessed the Foundation Stone for St. Thomas JSO Church in Brisbane. Further, His Holiness spent some time interacting with the congregation, especially with the little children who stayed up late to see the Patriarch, spreading the warmth of peace, joy and love around; and once again showering blessings upon the faithful community.
A big thank you to the Vicars, Managing Committees and the members of St Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, St George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church and St Mary's Knanaya Syrian Church for their wholehearted support. Thanks to IndOz Rhythms (Chendamelam), Symphony Events (Church & Hall decoration), Green House Media (Photography & Videography), Royal food and Sweets, Blacktown (Food), Binu Varghese c/o Pixela Media (Design works), Jeevan and Paul Kochukudy for the sound management.
