A Fresh Beginning:
Lent at Blacktown Regional Uniting Church

Beloved members of Blacktown Regional Uniting Church, Lent has begun—and it is so much more than giving up chocolate or coffee. It is God’s gracious invitation to renewal. In a world marked by division, uncertainty, and fragile trust—right here in Blacktown and across the globe—many hearts are weary. Lent calls us beyond surface religion and into wholehearted return. As the prophet declares in Book of Joel 2:12, “Return to me with all your heart.” This is the heartbeat of the season.

We see this same invitation in Gospel of Matthew 4:1, where Jesus is led into the wilderness and chooses trust over temptation. Lent invites us to do likewise— to pause, to pray more than we post, to reflect on what shapes our reactions, and to fast from whatever hardens our hearts. Pride, resentment, indifference—these are the things that dull our witness. This season is about surrendering ourselves afresh to Christ so that his mercy and love shine clearly through us.

And this renewal is not private or passive—it overflows into action. At BRUC, we see this lived out every week through our Thursday Hands and Feet ministry and the Saturday Bula Empowerment Group Hot Breakfast, standing alongside local neighbours facing hardship and poverty. We also remember the faithful work of Frontier Services and bush chaplains walking with isolated Australians. Lent does not pull us away from the world; it sends us into it more deeply rooted in Christ—ready to offer generosity, advocacy, hospitality, and hope.

In unsettled times, the Church is called to embody another way—the way of Christ: truthful, humble, and courageously loving. We refuse to echo the noise of fear, and instead bear witness to resurrection hope. Lent is not about spiritual performance; it is about transformation.

May these forty days anchor us in Christ, renew us by his Spirit, and shape us into a radiant community of hope.

Bondi Peace 💔 ✡️ 🙏

𝗔 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮, 𝗥𝗲𝘃 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝗹𝗶

This morning, we wake with heavy hearts following the tragic events at Bondi.

As the Uniting Church in Australia, we hold in prayer all who have been affected — those who have lost loved ones, those who are injured and recovering, the first responders and health workers, and the wider community carrying shock and grief.

We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and with all who were gathered in peace. Violence has no place in our shared life, and fear must not have the final word.

In the light of Christ, we commit ourselves again to compassion, care for one another, and the work of peace. May God’s love hold all who are hurting today.

𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿

God of mercy and peace,
we come to you with hearts that are tired and grieving.
We entrust to you the lives lost,
the wounded,
and all who are holding sorrow this day.

Surround the Jewish community and all who have been affected
with comfort, safety, and hope.
Strengthen those who serve and protect,
and grant wisdom and gentleness to all who lead and respond.

In a world shaken by violence,
teach us again the way of Christ —
the way of love, courage, and peace.
Hold us, heal us, and lead us forward.

Amen.
