Over the next four Sundays we will be sitting together in the Psalms, that great book of prayers and songs that has shaped the worshipping lives of God's people across the ages.

Over these four Sundays we’ll have Reforming preachers move through Psalms 15 to Psalm 18 — four psalms that together ask and answer some of the deepest questions of the Christian life.

Who may dwell with God?

Where is our true security?

Where do we turn when surrounded by enemies?

And what does it look like to know the Lord as our strength and deliverer?

Whether you are walking through a season of confidence or confusion, peace or pressure, these psalms will meet you there — because they were written by those who knew both, and who found in the Lord their refuge and their rock.

Come ready to pray, to sing, and to be anchored afresh in the God who is more than enough.

Patriarchalism and Egalitarianism exist on the same principle of argument, they exist in the opinion space of the black and white. Where, egalitarianism argues that there are no differences in roles between men and women and all can do everything. That is a black and white argument. But here is the beauty of complementarianism - it is biblical.

This coming Saturday the women of Reforming will be studying the great Romans 8 together.

We as a church are grateful for the many godly and gifted women we have who can teach and train women in our church from God’s word, Titus 2 style (Titus 2:3-5).

This Saturday Amy Knott will be teaching from Romans 8 at Reforming House, and ladies you’re invited to please bring a plate of food to share for a 10am start.

If you have any questions, please simply ask Aimee Grinter (Pastoral Assistant for Women’s & Children).

You can listen to Aimee Grinter’s introductory talk from Romans 8, at the last Reforming Women’s Bible and Bunch.

Then on Sunday we’ll be digging deep into 1st Timothy 1:11-15, with a sermon on ‘Learning and Leading in the Household of God’.

It is truly going to be a complementary weekend.

Studying the great Romans 8 together is so good for women’s hearts, there is so much for our lives here.

There is a question every church must answer, and the way it answers that question will shape everything else - what is the church actually for?

What is it that we are doing when we gather on the Lord’s Day? When we open the Scriptures together? When we pray and sing and receive the sacraments? Is this what the church is for? And should the church be doing a bunch of other many things?

Are we meant to be running a plethora of programs? Are we meant to be building a community organization that says “yes” to everything that is asked of us?

Or, is it possible that by seeing the church as a program, and program–driven, that instead of making disciples we end up making spiritual consumers?

This is what we’ll be diving into as we come to 1 Timothy 2:8-10 this coming Sunday.

We live in a society swimming in self-sufficiency, and yet is sinking.

And because the church can too easily imbibe culture from the world, we end up swimming in self-sufficiency too… and drowning.

So, we need 1st Timothy 2:1-7 - where we need to be, and we can be, reliant in prayer.

The Lord knows that His servants grow weary.

He knows Christians become discouraged.

He knows churches face pressures from false teaching, compromise, temptation, and fear.

And so here we have this encouragement - wage the good warfare, by holding faith in Jesus.

The Christian life is not a playground. It is a battlefield.

That is not the kind of thing modern people naturally like to hear, and as someone who has struggles and sins in the area of conflict avoidance – this is something I don’t want to face at times.

I prefer, we prefer, comfort to conflict.

We may look for the exit to ease, rather than stay with endurance.

We are tempted to seek for worldly safety rather than suit up for spiritual struggle.

Yet the apostle Paul describes the ministry of Timothy, and by extension the Christian life itself, as warfare.

Not worldly warfare with swords and violence, but spiritual warfare - and this Sunday’s passage from 1 Timothy 1:18-20 comes to us with remarkable pastoral tenderness.
