Magpie Swooping Season is Here!
Our local magpies are getting ready to welcome their new families, which means nesting season has arrived at Bellbrae Cemetery. As a quite rural sanctuary, we are incredibly lucky to share this beautiful space with native wildlife, and it is a wonderful reminder that these magpies are a protected species. While they are simply being devoted parents looking after their nests, we want to ensure all visitors feel safe, and at ease during their time here.
If you are planning a visit over the coming weeks, here are a few quick tips to help you navigate the grounds safely:
• 👒 Cover up: Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, or carry an umbrella for a bit of extra cover.
• 👀 Stay alert: Keep an eye out for nesting sites. If you can, travel in pairs or groups, as magpies are more likely to target individuals.
•🚶 Keep moving: If you enter a swooping zone, walk quickly but calmly. Do not run or panic, as sudden movements can be misinterpreted as aggressive behaviour.
• 🛑 Don't provoke them: Avoid waving your arms or throwing things, as they have excellent memories and will remember the threat.
• 👁️ Protect your eyes: If a magpie does swoop close to you, use your hands or arms to shield your face and eyes.
Following these tips will help us all share the space safely.
