Finding Joy in the Midst of Discipline ...

'No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening -- it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.' (Heb 12:11 NLT).

Missionary, author, and teacher Elisabeth Elliot once said, 'Pain is never wasted when it is surrendered to God.' While discipline and training are rarely joyful in the moment, persevering in God's will always yields a fruitful harvest. He uses disciplined endurance to shape our lasting joy.

Keep persevering!

Thought for the week ahead: Rejoice ... in suffering?

The Bible says in Romans that 'we can rejoice in our sufferings' and that 'suffering produces endurance.' And endurance develops character ... which strengthens hope. And that hope of salvation brings us joy.

Rejoice! And again, we say, rejoice!

Trials = Opportunity for Great Joy?

James 1:2-3 NLT ~ '... when troubles ... come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.'

Joy can coexist with difficulty when we understand that we can grow from it. Let's continue to persevere, knowing we are in God's hands.

God does not ask us to pretend trials are pleasant; He invites us to recognise their purpose. Perseverance reshapes our character, deepens our faith, and prepares us for glory that far outweighs present pain. Joy is not about emotional ease but spiritual clarity.

Sending you into the weekend with a prayer: ๐Ÿ™

'Father, help us to persevere with trust rather than fear. Teach us to see joy in what You are producing through the pain. Amen.'

โ€˜Establish the work of our handsโ€”yes, establish the work of our hands!โ€™ (Ps 90:17).

Our life on earth is short compared to God's eternity, so letโ€™s make our efforts (though they may seem fleeting) meaningful for His Kingdom by approaching every act of service with the kindness and compassion of Jesus. Whether a task is big or small, remember Mother Teresaโ€™s words: โ€˜We can do no great things, only small things with great love.โ€™

As we head into the week, let's remember that it is the love behind an action, not its magnitude, that truly matters. And our joy grows when we invite God to anchor our efforts, for even the simplest work we do becomes sacred when He establishes it.

Much of our work for God is done quietly -- without recognition or applause, or even immediate results. His Word reassures us that no labour done for Him is ever wasted. God sees every act of love, every moment of obedience, and every sacrifice offered in faith.

'God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized.' ~ Hebrews 6:10-11 NIV

Rejoice in the Lord (a devotion from 'Daily Discipleship'by LeRoy Eims)
Read the book of Habakkuk
โ€œDo not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.โ€ Nehemiah 8:10

The book of Habakkuk contains a passage you can cling to when the bottom falls out of everything. 'Though the ๏ฌg tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the ๏ฌelds produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my savior' (Habakkuk 3:17-18.)

I know of a missionary who has laboured for twenty-๏ฌve years with very few people responding to the gospel. Yet he clings to this passage in Habakkuk and ๏ฌnds comfort and encouragement. I think also of a mother who reared two children in a godly home. When they came of age, both daughters decided to follow the ways of the world. This praying woman continues to trust in the Lord. I know a man who spent the greater part of his life working for a large corporation. After twenty-๏ฌve years of faithful service, he was ๏ฌred without notice. Eventually, he also lost his home and his savings, but not his peace of mind.

Joy is not a matter of good fortune and pleasant circumstances. Joy is a decision, and God is the focus. Christian, what are your disappointments? What circumstances have gone wrong for you and are sapping your joy? I challenge you to memorize the passage from Habakkuk and claim it each morning. Finding our joy in the Lord is a matter of will โ€” a decision we can make because of the love and faithfulness of God.

Lord, show me how to ๏ฌx my inward gaze on You, my hope and my joy. Amen.

To Ponder: Circumstances can defeat us only when weโ€™ve taken our eyes off the Source of our joy.

'With all this going for us, my dear, dear friends, stand your ground. And donโ€™t hold back. Throw yourselves into the work of the Master, confident that nothing you do for him is a waste of time or effort.' (1 Cor 15:58 MSG)

We know that the work we do for the Lord is never wasted. Even our unseen faithfulness matters to God. And so our joy can spring from the confidence that our obedient work -- because of Christ's own work on the cross and His ressurection -- has eternal significance.

Rejoice! Have a great week ahead!

While we may honour great leaders with monuments, our cenotaphs remind us of the ordinary soldier. True service isn't about status -- itโ€™s about faithful, gritty labour.

Grant Dibden shares with us a reflection for this coming Anzac Day, as we honour those who served, and remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus.

Lest we forget.
