Cathedral Parish Assembly Concludes Weekend of Prayer and Discernment

The Cathedral Parish of St Michael and St John, Bathurst, concluded its Parish Assembly on Sunday, 7 June, following a weekend centred on prayer, listening, conversation and discernment.

The Assembly commenced on Saturday evening with the celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), followed by a period of Eucharistic Adoration. During this time, priests were available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Parishioners gathered before the Blessed Sacrament to pray for the parish and to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the Assembly began, entrusting its conversations, discernment and future direction to God’s care.

Throughout Sunday, parishioners came together in the Cathedral School Hall to participate in the Parish Assembly, reflecting on the life of the parish and sharing in a process of prayerful listening and conversation.

The Assembly forms part of the Diocese of Bathurst’s Walking Together initiative, which is seeing every parish across the Diocese host a Parish Assembly between Pentecost and the Solemnity of the Assumption. These assemblies provide an opportunity for parishioners to gather, listen, discern and identify ways to strengthen parish life and mission in their local communities.

The Assembly concluded with Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, where parishioners gave thanks for the gift of the Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian life, and for the many people who participated in the Assembly.

During the Mass, prayers were offered that the graces received through the Assembly would bear lasting fruit in the life of the parish and that the Holy Spirit would guide the next stage of the journey. Particular attention was given to strengthening communication, formation, discipleship, evangelisation and outreach, helping the parish become an ever more vibrant and missionary community.

As the Assembly moves into its next phase, the reflections and contributions shared by participants will be considered by parish leadership and the Walking Together group. These insights will assist in identifying practical ways to strengthen parish life and mission in the years ahead.

Once Parish Assemblies have been completed across the Diocese, a period of local and diocesan implementation will follow. This will enable parishes to act on the priorities identified through their assemblies while also informing broader diocesan planning and pastoral initiatives.

Today's Reflection
For the life of the world

+Michael McKenna
Bishop of Bathurst

Jesus speaks plainly of his mission in today’s Gospel. “The bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” The Son of God has entered his own creation, to take mortal flesh and bring it through death, into life.

He has come, not just as a prophet or teacher, but to be the Way to our union with God. As the priest or deacon prays quietly during the preparation of the gifts at Mass: “By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

The manna that God gave to nourish his people on their journey out of slavery through the desert foreshadows what was to come: the living bread from heaven which nourishes us until we reach our heavenly home.

Today’s feast is about more than the Eucharist, because the Eucharist is about more than the Eucharist. The Eucharistic moment expands back in time to include the Last Supper; and beyond time to the Heavenly Banquet. The Mass is always, then, and now “the Supper of the Lamb.” In it, we take part in the perfect sacrifice of Christ and enter into communion as his Body, the Church, on earth and in heaven.

Jesus, help me understand that in the Mass I offer myself with you, and truly receive you in communion with my brothers and sisters to become your presence of reconciliation, truth and service in the world you have entered.

Let us pray for the Cathedral Parish of Bathurst as they gather for their Parish Assembly today.

May the Holy Spirit guide them as they listen, discern, and seek how they are called to grow in mission and reach out to their community.

"Father, you have sent us here in these times to receive your mercy and proclaim it to others. In this world of shadows you offer us your light: shining brighter when we share it.

As we walk in this light, let us love one another as you have loved us.

Through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in unity with the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever."

Amen.

Our Lady of the Central West, St Patrick, St Francis and St Mary of the Cross.

On the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we pause to give thanks for the gift of the Eucharist.

As we celebrate this feast, may it renew our sense of reverence and deepen our awareness of the Lord who stays with us always.

“This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19)

FROM THE ARCHIVES: A Human Formation (Living Tableau) of a Chalice in Bathurst (1930)

In the archives of our Diocese lies a remarkable photograph that captures a powerful expression of faith and community.

As part of the Centenary celebrations marking the first recorded Catholic Mass in the Bathurst district in 1830, large numbers of students from St Patrick's College and St Mary's College gathered to form the image of a Chalice and Host. Viewed from above, the scene became a striking symbol of the Eucharist and the faith that had taken root in the region over the previous century.

In an era long before digital photography, such a formation required careful planning, patience, and a shared sense of purpose. A coordinator can be seen standing on a raised platform directing and choreographing the students as they created this memorable tribute. Devotional tableau vivants or "living pictures" were popular during Eucharistic and Centenary celebrations in this era.

This image is more than just a historical curiosity; it is a visual reminder of the deep roots of our faith in the Bathurst region.

We invite everyone to reflect on this piece of our diocesan history and pray for those who walked before us in faith.

Missionary Church

Pope Leo XIV has called the Church to be “a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges and encourages dialogue.” Our Parish Assembly is an opportunity to reflect together on how we can become a more welcoming, missionary and outward-looking parish community.

All parishioners are warmly invited to attend and register.

Today's Reflection
A reality to contemplate with awe and gratitude

Fr Thao Nguyen
Administrator, St Raphael’s Parish, Cowra

Have you ever paused in wonder -.a breathtaking sunset, the vast night sky filled with stars, the birth of a child? In those moments, words are inadequate.

The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity draws us into that same indescribable wonder. We often call the Trinity a mystery but it’s not a puzzle we can solve. The Greek word mysterion means “something to wonder at.” The Trinity is beyond comprehension or explanation but is a reality to contemplate with awe and gratitude.

We know God is the great “I AM” - the ultimate reality - we experience His presence, mercy, and love. And the more we come to know God, the more we desire to know him.

As Richard Rohr wisely said, “A mystery is not something we cannot understand; it is something infinitely understandable”. What we know of the Trinity, is only what has been REVEALED.

Saint Paul says: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all”. With these words, he points us to the heart of the Trinity – a relationship of infinite pure love.

The Father loves the Son, the Son gives Himself completely to the Father, and the Holy Spirit unites them in perfect love. Through Jesus, we are invited into that relationship.

The Cross reminds us of this calling. Its vertical beam points to God’s love reaching down to us; its horizontal beam reminds us to extend that love to others.

As we prepare for our Parish Assembly, may we remember that a parish is built not merely on structures or programs but on relationships - relationships with one another and above all, relationship with the Blessed Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Blessed Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
We thank You for revealing Yourself as a communion of love.
Draw us closer to You and to one another.
As we prepare for our Parish Assembly,
guide us by Your Spirit, that our parish may grow in faith, unity, and love.
Amen

May the Holy Spirit guide them as they listen, discern, and seek how they are called to grow in mission and reach out to their community.

Please keep them in your prayers.

"Father, you have sent us here in these times to receive your mercy and proclaim it to others.
