Cathedral Parish, Bathurst

Cathedral Parish, Bathurst The Cathedral Parish is a Catholic faith community located in Bathurst, NSW, Australia.

The Cathedral Parish is a Catholic faith community centred on Bathurst NSW, Australia. It embraces people in the city of Bathurst and surrounding countryside and the towns and villages from Sofala and Wattle Flat to the north to Rockley and Burraga to the south. The members of the community provide, or are involved in, many different endeavours in striving to live out the Good News of the Reign of

God’s Love within our local community. The Word of God and our personal and communal prayer nurtures our spirituality that is then activated in our service of others in health and aged care, education, care of those in need and of the environment that sustains us, and the many diverse ways that ‘love of neighbour’ is lived out by members of the community.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: A Human Formation (Living Tableau) of a Chalice in Bathurst (1930)

In the archives of our Diocese lies a remarkable photograph that captures a powerful expression of faith and community.

As part of the Centenary celebrations marking the first recorded Catholic Mass in the Bathurst district in 1830, large numbers of students from St Patrick's College and St Mary's College gathered to form the image of a Chalice and Host. Viewed from above, the scene became a striking symbol of the Eucharist and the faith that had taken root in the region over the previous century.

In an era long before digital photography, such a formation required careful planning, patience, and a shared sense of purpose. A coordinator can be seen standing on a raised platform directing and choreographing the students as they created this memorable tribute. Devotional tableau vivants or "living pictures" were popular during Eucharistic and Centenary celebrations in this era.

This image is more than just a historical curiosity; it is a visual reminder of the deep roots of our faith in the Bathurst region.

We invite everyone to reflect on this piece of our diocesan history and pray for those who walked before us in faith.

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary’s ongoing intercession and maternal care for all Christians.

In Australia, this feast holds special significance, as Mary Help of Christians is honoured as the nation's principal patroness. Under her care, the faithful entrust the Church in Australia, seeking her guidance and protection in every season of life and mission.

As we celebrate this feast, we ask for her prayers and guidance, that she may lead us ever closer to Christ.

Mary Help of Christians, pray for us.
