Today we stand at the doorway to Lent, and begin the long journey through the wilderness to Holy Week. This is a holy day too, when we hear those ancient words of fragility and grace – that God has formed us ‘from the dust of the earth’, that we are the stuff of stardust and ashes, finite and fleeting, yet we are held in God's hands.

These words were written by the gifted Cheryl Lawrie.

So the day comes around again
and we find ourselves surprised
again
by the truth
that we are mortal
The stuff of dust and ashes.
Our egos and esteem are held up
to the brutal mirror of the finite:
Know that you will end.
The world will continue without you.
And it’s only with our vision so narrowed
that we are again
able to see
all that lies beyond us:
Know that you are not God.
Know that all the things that make heaven and earth
reach way beyond you.
Live today with faith in your humanness
and let that lead you to life.
Welcome to Lent.

God of every pilgrim heart
you are beside us
and before us on the way,
surprising us through your Spirit
at every turning on the path.
At the breaking of this dawn,
and in whatever this day may hold,
break open our eyes
to see your presence,
break open our hearts
to your embrace,
that we may know
the joy of life with you,
our companion and our friend.

A huge thank you once again to West Lakes United Church for their wonderful support of our church Free Pantry. The cupboard was looking bare but now is nearly full again. Doesn't stay that way, of course.
Try to remember to bring pantry goods on Communion Sunday (second Sunday of the month) but any time is good!!
