What the Lord Mayor's Prayer Breakfast said to us and what we're going to do about it.

As far as leadership talks go, this is not the scaffolding I pictured. Aim Lower. Think Smaller. Give Up and Have a Coffee. Yet John Robertson of the Leadership Network Australia and New Zealand presented this exact case recently at the Lord Mayor's Prayer Breakfast.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner set the tone: that the Christian Church is a steady rock, a foundation upon which communities can be genuinely built. Then John’s keynote address offered three phrases. While we were actively against God, he still moved toward us. We were reconciled through the cross before we ever chose to receive it. That's not religion. That's grace. 🙏

"Why are you a Christian?" "How can you believe when... ?" "What about ... ?" With Christianity trending in popular culture, conversations with friends and family inevitably involve questions you might not know how to answer. What is the evidence Christianity is true? How do we answer Bible objections (moral, textual, historical, scientific)? Is God really good despite suffering, judgment, and hiddenness? And is the Christian vision of life and ethics worth believing?

We are bringing together some great voices for our first Apologetics Summit in Brisbane. The goal is to help you wrestle with these questions, equipping Christians to commend and defend the gospel, and to be ready to give a reason for the hope that lies within (1 Peter 3:15). You'll walk away from this summit not just with some helpful answers to tough questions, but with a model on how to better engage questioners, sharing Christian truth like Jesus.

Glen Scrivener leads Speaklife (UK) and beautifully captures the truth and goodness of the Christian story in spoken word, having debated some of the world's best known atheists. Luke Barnes is my phone-a-friend on all things science and Christianity, as a world-expert on cosmic fine-tuning, and a GP in apologetics.

"When we say we want to invest in generations and grow a church is it because we want to be THE bigger church, or do we want people to know Jesus Christ?"
That's it. That's the whole thing.
Our answer to that changes everything. How we give, how we serve, how we measure success, what we celebrate, what we're actually building.

This one came home with me from Alpha Leadership Conference.
We do not need more maps. We need the guide. And the guide is JESUS!
The great commission is not a step-by-step guide but a relationship.

It is a mistake when we approach the Christian life like we're following a map. A to-do list. A programme. A ladder to climb, and if we get it right, somewhere at the end, God is waiting.

But that is not what Jesus had in mind.

You don't need a map. You need a guide and the guide is Jesus; he's already with you.

We covered obedience, discipleship, baptism, restoration, and what it actually means to strive and came back to where it all begins:
I am with you always.
