Announcement 📣

A Blessed Holy Thursday to all!

Tomorrow on Holy Friday, we commemorate and mourn the Crucifixion and burial of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In solemn contemplation we observe this day with fervent reverence and quietude, prayerful fasting and eating very little.

All are encouraged to observe the following services tomorrow during this day.

1. Service of the Royal Hours: 8:00am - 9:30am. These hours follow the scourging and crucifixion of our Lord on the cross. Our Lord was biblically nailed to the cross at 9:00am.

2. Vespers service 3:00pm - 4:00pm. The taking down of the body of Christ from the Cross. The biblical narrative specifically details that Christ gave up His spirit at 3:00pm and was removed from the Cross.

3. Service of Lamentations 7:00pm - 10:00pm. We stand at the tomb of Christ, the epitaphios, singing mournfully while coupled with the hope of the resurrection.

Furthermore, in the mourning after the Royal hours’ service, from 10:00am - 1:00pm, we will be decorating the epitaphios in the Church hall. It is by tradition that women attend this tradition and help. Families are also welcome with their children though being mindful that the occasion is solemn and peaceful.

Glory to your long-suffering, O Lord, glory to you.

Here are the dates and times for our services in the next week.

Don’t forget to bring an icon to Church tomorrow!

Tomorrow we arrive at the first Sunday of Great-lent. The theme for this Sunday commemorates the “Triumph of Orthodoxy” over the iconoclastic controversy which saw the destruction and removal of icons and religious images from churches and homes. This controversy lasted for over 100 years, 725AD until its final rest on the first Sunday of Great-lent, March 11th, 843AD.

On this day, Saint (Empress) Theodora reinstated icons and religious images in the Byzantine Empire as worthy of veneration. A large procession was then led holding icons to Hagia Sophia and to this day, we celebrate this “Triumph” at every first Sunday of Great lent.

It is customary that everyone bring icons to church on this day to celebrate our Orthodox faith which stands firm through all trials and tribulation, bearing witness to the world about the good news of Jesus Christ and our salvation through Him.

We start Great-lent with this as a reminder that the gates of hades will never prevail over the Church, because this victory, like many others through out history, bears testimony to the victory of the Cross and the Resurrection on the third day. We begin our Lenten struggle as we will end it, in triumph. We begin in triumph to direct our mind to the destination of Lent, that is, the Death and Resurrection of Christ which has trampled down death by death.

Our Junior and Senior dance groups last night learning some traditional dances! Learning traditional Greek dancing is a great way to instil in our children a connection to their past and ancient customs. For adults, it is a way to continue and lead by example the beautiful customs that we have, and also good exercise!

Good morning, everyone, God bless
