Social Justice Sunday - Is Peace Possible?
Social Justice Sunday is observed annually on the final Sunday in August with this year's commemoration falling on this Sunday, 25 August. The Catholic Church in Australia has had a long tradition of commemorating Social Justice Sunday with the Catholic Bishops issuing an annual Social Justice Statement practically every year since 1940. The Social Justice Statement for 2024-25 entitled Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World scrutinises the signs of our own times in the light of the Gospel, sees the violence and asks why the world is as it is and what is needed for there to be peace. Sr Patricia Fox reflects on this year's statement and asks the question is peace possible?

Sandy Curnow Reflection
They called it the Jesus Boat though nobody could prove it. The 1986 drought in Israel dried the Sea of Galilee and from the mud emerged the wooden frame of a First Century AD fishing boat with an old lamp and a cooking pot lying on the floorboards. It was made chiefly of cedar, though repaired with up to ten other types of timber, and the planks held together by wooden pegs and nails. Apparently when the boat was no longer repairable, any useful timber was removed, and the rest was towed out into the middle of the lake and sunk.

From the Parish House
St Paul has given us some incredible writings which give us an insight into the emerging Christian communities of the first century. We read about their struggles, their conflicts, their passion and their burning zeal for Christ. St Paul urges them on. Like an Olympic coach wanting the best for his team, Paul encourages, rebukes and pleads with the communities he has introduced to Christ, always wanting to shape them into living witnesses of faith, hope and love.

Seeking Human Kindness
Homelessness Week is an annual campaign coordinated by Homelessness Australia to help drive awareness about homelessness, its affects and the solutions needed to end homelessness. When we think about our life in Australia, we don’t imagine ourselves homeless. Yet, for many, living without a home is a reality.

A home is not just walls and a roof, it is a place where people can feel safe and secure. We should all be able to access safe and secure housing, but this is not the case.

As Homelessness Week draws to a close, visit the Parish Blog to read how you may be able to help those less fortunate... www.cbdparish.org.au/blog/

The Surprise of the Cross by Cathy Jenkins
There’s a new ‘gourmet’ supermarket in my local shopping strip. On my first visit, as I was gazing, queuing to pay and pondering their business model (it’s a competitive market in these economic times, I was thinking!), I was stopped short. Placed above the required signage for licensed premises is a bronze crucifix.

Today is Seafarers Sunday...
Stella Maris is the apostolic work of the Catholic Church offering hospitality and pastoral care to the people of the sea.

In almost every country bound by sea, there exists a community of people who care for seafarers, fishers and their families regardless of their country or culture.

Seafarer Sunday gives us the opportunity to acknowledge all seafarers, the 1.8 million of them who sail the world’s oceans.

Renewing the Face of the Earth
by Cathy Jenkins
Hydrangeas are one of my favourite flowers. There is something about the intricacy of their individual petals and the impact they have when grouped together. The size of the blooms, the colours – they are truly magnificent. I have a friend, though, who really dislikes them. ‘They are so dramatic’, she will say with an eye roll.
