Blessed are those who are merciful to others.

Mercy responds to immediate pain, while wisdom also looks for the wound, pattern, or injustice beneath it. God can teach us to do both. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.” — James 1:5

Confessions of a preacher:

The scripture was Ephesians 6:10-17 “The sword of the spirit”

This is what I planned to talk about last Sunday:

1. Swords are a war weapon and wars are horrific. (So why would he give us a sword?)

2. God is creator and creation is wonderful (not horrific) (So why would he give us a sword?)

3. Our battle is not against other people, but mostly against ourselves and the spiritual forces that want us to battle against other people instead of co-creating something wonderful (He’s not giving us a *real* sword 🤦)

4. The bible is sometimes horrific and doesn’t shy away from the reality that sometimes our spiritual battles are horrific.

5. But what we’re fighting for, and the strength we’re fighting with, is the loving, powerful, creative, positive Spirit of God the creator.

I was on the edge of tears for most of it, struggling to speak, and it went on for about twice as long as it should have.

Lord have mercy.
