Please join me as I speak at this important event this Thursday, 10th Sept.

This September, Ararat is coming together to start meaningful conversations and show that su***de prevention is everyone’s business. Practical support can begin with checking in on someone you care about: ask “Are you OK?”, listen with an open mind, encourage them to seek support if needed, and check in again. A conversation can make a real difference.

On Thursday 10 September, Ararat Town Hall will be illuminated in teal and purple for World Su***de Prevention Day. We’ll light up yellow on Friday 11 September for R U OK?Day - a visible reminder that no-one needs to face a tough time alone.

Ararat Police, with support from Ararat Rural City Council and the Astor Cinema Ararat, invite the community to a free movie night at the Astor Cinema, Barkly Street, from 7.00pm (doors open 6.30pm). Enjoy Spa Weekend, Mutiny or The End of Oak Street, bring a partner, family member, friend or colleague, and take the opportunity to check in. R U OK? merchandise and information on starting conversations - and responding to difficult answers - will be available. Drinks and snacks can be purchased on the night.

Lucian died alongside Fr Henry Matthews…

“I will stay with the fathers and the sisters.” - Lucian Tapiedi (1921-1942), final words before martyrdom alongside fellow Christian martyrs

Lucian Tapiedi was among a group of Anglican clergy, teachers, and medical missionaries ministering in Papua New Guinea in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The son of a Papuan sorcerer, Tapiedi came to faith in Christ at an Anglican mission school and later became a teacher at St. Aidan’s Teacher Training College in Dogura. During World War II, with Japanese invasion imminent, the Anglican Bishop of New Guinea instructed missionaries and clergy to remain in New Guinea and not abandon those they served, despite the extreme risks. “If we all left, it would take years for the Church to recover from our betrayal of our trust. If we remain — and even if the worst came to the worst and we were all to perish in remaining — the Church would not perish, for there would have been no breach of trust in its walls, but its foundations and structure would have received added strength for the future building by our faithfulness unto death.” Tapiedi and many others agreed to stay at their posts and suffered martyrdom soon after the invasion. Today, Tapiedi is among the ‘Modern Martyrs’ carved in limestone on the exterior of Westminster Abbey.

Almighty God, you gave your servants, the martyrs of Papua New Guinea, boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Pray for Nepal

We pray for the people of Nepal following the devastating floods and landslides.

For the families of those who have died, those still missing, and all whose homes and livelihoods have been affected.

For emergency workers and communities responding to the devastation.

May God bring comfort to those who grieve, strength to those who suffer, and hope for the days ahead.

Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

MOYSTON NATIVE - MARTYR OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Our parish which is over 160 years old, have a deep connection with the Martyrs of Papua New Guinea. The Revd. Henry Matthews was born in Moyston, also famous as the birthplace of Australian Rules Football. Henry Matthews was the eldest son, and third child of Cornishman, William Henry Matthews, originally of Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall, and the wife he married in 1873 on the Goldfields of Victoria, Australia, Sarah Warren, born in Hertfordshire, England. Henry was one of a big family. He had four sisters and four brothers born in Moyston or the Ararat Goldfields of Victoria, Australia. Some of his family members still worship with us today! Sadly, Henry Matthews was killed in 1942 as reported by the Anglican Board of Mission.

“It is with great sorrow that we have received the news that the Rev. H. Matthews has been reported "Missing, believed killed or drowned." In all the Rev. H. Matthews gave 33 years of his life to active missionary service, 18 years at the Mitchell River Mission as Superintendent, and subsequently as Chaplain, and 15 years at Port Moresby as Vicar and, since 1939, as Garrison Chaplain.”
