All of us know the Led Zeppelin classic song Stairway to Heaven, although a friend told me that the guitar shops on Parramatta Road have banned it because too many aspiring guitarists try out the opening bars on potential purchases — and it has driven the staff mad.
But have you ever stopped to think about its theology?
Is there a stairway to heaven? Can we find it? Climb it? Buy our way up?
This Sunday at Village Church we're looking at one of the Bible's most famous scenes — Jacob's dream in Genesis 28.
Jacob sees a stairway stretching from earth to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
But here's the surprise: Jacob doesn't climb the stairway.
He doesn't build it.
He doesn't buy it.
He doesn't even go looking for it.
God comes to him.
And centuries later Jesus takes up Jacob's extraordinary vision and says that ultimately the meeting place between heaven and earth is him.
Join us this Sunday as we open Genesis 28.
