Getting with the program:
In this teaching, I’m going to concentrate on Peter. To start with I’d like to look at what Jesus said to Peter.
Math 16: 13-19.
Jesus said ‘who do people say that I am’? and he disciples said some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets, then Jesus said ‘But who do you say that I am and Peter answered ‘you are the Christ the son of the living God’. Then Jesus replied to him and said to him.’ blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my father who is in heaven.
And I also say to you you are Peter and on this rock I would build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom, and whetever you bind on Earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
The Rock that Jesus was speaking about was not literally Peter, but it was the rock of revelation that Peter had received and what was needed to build the Church.
Paul had great revelation we read in
Eph 3: 10. That a goal of the Church is ‘ that the manifold wisdom of God might be made known through the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places’ this was some of the revelation that Paul had,
In order for this to happen, there has to be people who know their standing in God and get personal revelation.
Acts 8: Peter and John having been sent by the Jerusalem Church went to Samaria to check out the new converts that Phillip had brought to the Lord, Samaria was not a popular place due to their mixed race from the past however the Lord was preparing Peter for the future.
Peter and John laid hands on the new converts and they were filled with a spirit. It was a sign of their apostolic authority.
I’ve no doubt the Jerusalem Church would have sent more people to disciple and tutor the new disciples in the ways of the Lord.
Acts 10: a couple of chapters later we hear that Peter was staying with Simon the Tanner and that was forbidden by Jewish law because that means Peter would have to handle dead bodies, that was forbidden by the law but God reassured him by giving him a vision of all kinds of four footed animals and creeping things and birds of the air and God said to him ‘Peter kill and eat’ and Peter said no I cannot eat anything that is unclean and God spoke to him again what God has cleansed you must not call common. This was done three times and the object was taken up into heaven. Peter‘s prejudices had to be dealt with and the Lord had a very unique way of doing that by giving him a vision.
I personally have a saying that when you clearly hear from God instantly obey, because if you question it and analyse it and check it out with others, you can lose the faith that you had at first when you heard the word.
It is really interesting that previously Acts 9: 40 Peter preached to the Samaritans, he’d raised the dead, but his heart and his mind had to be updated and changed in order for him to go further with the kingdom of God and be effective.
Once Peter had been updated, he then updated the Jerusalem Church and told them about the vision he had while staying with Simon the Tanner and in preaching to the Gentiles Cornelius the Centurion and the people under him being an example.
of the grace of God and the fact that as Peter was giving his testimony the Holy Spirit was poured upon them and they spoke in tongues and then Peter and those with him immediately baptised the new Converts.
When God is on the move, we have to be in a place where we are really responsive and give the Holy Spirit free reign.
I’ve personally seen many times that the Holy Spirit is desperate to move, but the structure created has not allowed that to happen, structure and order is a good but it has to be flexible allowing God free reign.
The other side of the coin so to speak is that when God acts the enemy often reacts an example of this is
Acts 12: where we read that Herod had killed James the brother of John because he saw it pleased the Jews
And furthermore, he had Peter arrested no doubt planning to kill him, but Peter was so secure in his God and knowing that James had been killed by Herod and knew he could be awaiting the same fate was able to sleep and it said a angel rescued him that was the second time that this happened to Peter see Acts 5: 19.
Peter knew from experience that in times of great revival there is also great prosecution and also great deliverance and was able to encourage people that was going through similar trials read one and two Peter.
Peter as a man didn’t really learn apart from Jesus too many things from other people. He was the kind of man that was impetuous and as a person he had to go through trial and error. He learned by experience that can be a painful way to learn, but when you do you never forget it.
The Lord personally dealt with Herod, who was a persecutor of the Church at that time and he died a painfull death.
Peter was later matyred by Nero
In AD 67 by being crucified upside down. Peter didn’t believe he was worthy enough to be crucified the right way up if there is a right way like Jesus so was crucified upside by choice.
For those reading this particularly in Africa and parts of India at this time that are going through incredible trials and tribulations. I pray that the Lord will give you strength and the ability to stand firm in your belief and that there will be mighty deliverances on your journey and that you will be strengthened in your inner man in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
