Over 500,000 seafarers visit Australian ports each year. Seafarer centres services can be critical to seafarer well-being. They include emergency medical support and advocacy, rights support, provision of Wi-Fi and SIM cards, transport to shops and medical appointments, support for mental and physical well-being, faith-based services, and currency exchange.

The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) is a crucial international agreement aimed at ensuring decent working and living conditions for seafarers. It was adopted by the International Labour Conference on 23 February 2006 and has undergone several amendments since its entry into force on 20 August 2013. The MLC, 2006 consolidates and updates 38 existing ILO conventions, establishing comprehensive rights and protections for seafarers. It applies to all commercial vessels and aims to achieve decent work arrangements for seafarers and secure economic interests in fair competition for quality ship owners. The convention's implementation is overseen by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) in Australia, which verifies compliance through various means, including inspections and certification of vessels. The MLC, 2006 also includes provisions for seafarers' welfare, including shore leave, repatriation, and medical care. The convention's amendments reflect ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare and safety of seafarers, with the latest updates expected to enter into force by late December 2027.
