The Ups and Downs of a Great Vertical Migration

The deep ocean is widely considered the ‘final frontier’ for human exploration on earth. Despite covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, more than 80% of the ocean remains entirely unmapped and unseen by humans. The deep sea, in particular, is a vast, largely unknown expanse, potentially home to millions of undiscovered species, unique ecosystems and exceptional geological formations like hydrothermal vents. In connection with these deep-sea secrets, God asked Job, “Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?” (Job 38:16 RSV). The answer was obviously, “No”! Even today with all […]

Unique Features of the Gospels – Mark (1)

Introduction “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God…” Thus, Mark commences writing his account of the life of the Lord. “The Son of God” is a title which will shape the narrative which follows. In the first chapter, we see the One over whom the heavens were rent, as the voice of God proclaimed “Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (1:11). We see him recognised as the Son of God by those in desperate need of healing (3:11; 5:7). We again hear the voice of God bear witness to His Son at the […]

Genesis Chapters 1–3 (10)

Judgment, Punishment and Hope (3:16-24) Verse 16 “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception” – Both during birth and in its results (cp Gen 4:8; Prov 10:1; 17:25; 29:15). But in the punishment there was hope – in the birth of the promised seed. “thy desire shall be to thy husband” – A “teshuwqah” = a stretching out after and hence a longing; from the root “shuwq” = to rush after or over, ie: to overflow (like water). LXX & Syriac render “desire” as “returning”, whereas the Concordant Version renders it as “restoration”. Eve is a type of the Ecclesia which is restored to […]

Prophecy and the Press

Iran’s Revolution woes On 28 December 2025, protests erupted in Tehran, Iran’s capital city. They followed a year of economic freefall and spiralling devaluation of the rial, Iran’s currency, which had lost more than 40% of its value since Israel’s 12-day conflict with Iran in June 2025. Those losses were just the latest in a prolonged collapse that had erased nearly 90% of the rial’s value since the United States quit the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran in 2018. The protests quickly spread across the country and evolved into the most serious challenge to the Islamic Republic since […]

The Tapestry of Scripture

Keen Bible readers and students give close attention to the text of Scripture. They know that as God’s inspired Word it “is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work”. God graciously revealed His plan and purpose in writing that it may be preserved, read and heard by the faithful in all ages. We recognise how blessed we are to have God’s Word available to us to read whenever we have opportunity. Prior to the invention of moveable type and the printing press, […]

The Moon

Psalm 8:3 asks us to consider the heavens: “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained”. If you’ve got a pair of gloves available, you might like to grab hold of these before reading this article. In Psalm 8 we read that the universe and all its celestial orbs are the work of God’s fingers. But interestingly, only the moon is mentioned by name. Note that it’s not God’s hands that are mentioned, but His fingers, because this alludes to the special care and attention He has given when constructing the universe. The word ordained in Psalm […]

Fragment of an Assyrian Cuneiform Inscription Discovered Near Jerusalem’s Temple Mount

The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has announced that a fragment of an Assyrian cuneiform inscription on a pottery sherd from the First Temple period (eighth to seventh centuries BC) has been uncovered near Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.[1] Measuring about 2.5cm (1 inch) in size, the tiny artefact was discovered during an excavation in the Davidson Archaeological Park, adjacent to the Western Wall. Researchers suggest that the inscription was likely a bulla used to seal a letter that was written on perishable material, such as papyrus.[2] It represents the first inscription in the Akkadian[3] language ever found in Jerusalem from the First Temple […]

Whom Do We Serve?

“Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and the honour of my majesty?” This arrogant remark brought Nebuchadnezzar to his knees and his great Babylon has since become a heap of ruins. Today we live in a bustling world bent on the pursuit of their own pleasures and their activities will have as much lasting value as Nebuchadnezzar’s hanging gardens. For a time, his hanging gardens made his homesick wife happy, but she too has mouldered into dust and her love for her mountains died with […]

The Cherubim (5)

In Ezekiel Of all the biblical accounts of the cherubim, Ezekiel’s visions give us the richest picture of their appearance and activity. The prophecy opens with a vision of the cherubim that was so awesome it caused Ezekiel to fall upon his face. What was it that Ezekiel saw and what did it signify? This will be the subject of the next two articles as we explore the cherubim in Ezekiel chapters 1 and 10. Ezekiel’s prophecy can be generally divided into four parts: 1. His commission (chapters 1–3); 2. The judgment on Jerusalem (chapters 4–24); 3. Judgment on the […]

The Laws of Release in Deuteronomy 15 (2)

The law of servitude release Let’s examine another dimension of release in Deuteronomy 15:12-18, one operating on individual rather than national timing. Unlike the sabbatical debt release, this freedom-giving operated seven years from when service began: “If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you, he shall serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you” (Deut 15:12).[1] This system represents another facet of God’s identity-building for Israel. Like the debt release, it addressed survival needs, but through household service rather than direct loans. When misfortune struck a […]

Ruth (9)

Naomi’s Plan for Redemption Things are now turning positive for Ruth. It required faith and commitment to leave Moab, dedicating herself to Israel’s hope, and labouring to glean barley in strenuous conditions, but ultimately, this wonderful faith was rewarded as Boaz’s grace extended towards her and Naomi. The combination of Ruth’s faithful labours and Boaz’s grace yielded tremendous results in the field, enabling Ruth to return home with an ephah of barley. The daily provision of manna was an omer, which was the tenth part of an ephah (Exod 16:36). Ruth had therefore gleaned ten times this amount in barley, […]
