A statement from our Chief Executive Officer Ian Byrne

Today we acknowledge National Sorry Day.

A day that recognises the pain and harm experienced by Stolen Generations Survivors, while also acknowledging their strength and resilience. It is a time to reflect on the ongoing impact of past policies that removed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, communities and cultures.

It is also important to acknowledge that First Nations children continue to be overrepresented in the child protection system today.

This year’s theme, From Sorry to Action, reminds us that reconciliation requires more than reflection. It calls on all of us to listen, learn and consider the role we each play in supporting meaningful change.

If you would like to deepen your understanding, I encourage you to explore the following:
• Reconciliation Australia: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-sorry-day-from-sorry-to-action/
• The Healing Foundation: https://healingfoundation.org.au/

Tomorrow marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week and I’m looking forward to joining colleagues, RAP members and peers from across the sector at the Reconciliation SA Breakfast.

Reconciliation is not a one-day or one-week commitment - it’s an ongoing responsibility. Each of us can reflect on what we can do in our own lives and in our roles at work: to tread softly on the land, to learn about and respect culture, and to support and walk alongside First Nations peoples in meaningful ways.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect today.

1. Who has been helpful to you this past week?
2. In what ways have you helped others?

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday.

I wonder where you hear Jesus' voice?

Jesus our Good Shepherd, through this day your hand has led us, and we thank you for your care. You have warmed us, clothed and fed us; listen to our grateful prayer. Amen
