Ricarda Merbeth returns to the Opéra national du Capitole this evening to make her role debut as the Foreign Princess in Dvořák’s "Rusalka", which inaugurates the company’s 2026/27 season. She previously appeared in Toulouse as Elektra in 2021 and as the Dyer’s Wife in "Die Frau ohne Schatten" in 2024.

Acclaimed as one of the leading Wagner and Strauss interpreters of her generation, Ricarda Merbeth adds the Foreign Princess to a repertoire encompassing some of the most demanding dramatic soprano roles, including Brünnhilde, Isolde, Senta, Elektra, the Dyer’s Wife, and Turandot.

Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the revival of Stefano Poda’s production, first presented at the Opéra national du Capitole in 2022.

Further performances take place on September 25, 27, and 30, and October 4.

Toi, toi, toi to Juan Sancho, who opens his 2026/27 season as Pane in Francesco Cavalli’s "La Calisto", which inaugurates the Theater an der Wien’s new season.

Cavalli’s music has accompanied Juan Sancho since the early years of his career. In 2008, he sang Pallante in the first modern revival of "La virtù de’ strali d’Amore" at Venice’s Teatro Malibran, conducted by Fabio Biondi with Europa Galante. The production was later released on DVD by Naxos.

The new production of "La Calisto" is staged by Theater an der Wien artistic director Stefan Herheim and conducted by Christina Pluhar, one of today’s leading interpreters of 17th-century music, leading L’Arpeggiata.
A coproduction with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, "La Calisto" has further performances on September 19, 21, 24, 26, and 28.

A major milestone for Beth Taylor as she opens her 2026/27 season making her long-awaited debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, in Richard Jones’ Olivier Award-winning production conducted by David Bates.

Handel and Baroque opera play a significant role in the Scottish mezzo-soprano’s repertoire, which includes Cornelia in Giulio Cesare, Elmira in Floridante and Dardano in Amadigi di Gaula, as well as Handel’s Messiah. Bradamante showcases the rich lower register, vocal agility, and dramatic intensity that have established Beth Taylor as one of today’s most distinctive mezzo-sopranos.

Performances are this evening and on September 18, 20, 23, 25, and October 3.

Michael Spyres launches a packed 2026/27 season that will take him to many of the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls, beginning with two concerts at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg this evening and 15, which also open the company’s new season.

Joined by the Orchestre philharmonique du Rhin under conductor Matthew Straw, Michael Spyres explores the Romantic and post-Romantic repertoire in a program spanning Wagner, Bizet, Massenet, Korngold and Richard Strauss. Among the highlights are Don José’s “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” from "Carmen" and "Werther"’s “Pourquoi me réveiller?”, alongside excerpts from Wagner and Richard Strauss.

The concerts mark Michael Spyres’s return to the Opéra national du Rhin, where he gave a recital in 2019 and, most recently, made his role debut as Wagner’s "Lohengrin" in 2024.

The winners of the 2026 Austrian Music Theatre Awards have been announced!

Congratulations to Michael Spyres, who has won the award for Best Male Leading Role for his acclaimed portrayal of Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina in Pfitzner’s "Palestrina" at the Wiener Staatsoper. Michael Spyres made his role debut in Herbert Wernicke’s production in December 2024, under the baton of Christian Thielemann.

Helmut Fischer Artists International is delighted that two of our singers, Michael Spyres and Federico Fiorio, are among the finalists for the 2026 Austrian Music Theatre Awards.

Michael Spyres has been nominated for Best Male Leading Role for his acclaimed portrayal of Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina in Pfitzner’s "Palestrina" at the Wiener Staatsoper, in Herbert Wernicke’s production conducted by Christian Thielemann in December 2024.

Federico Fiorio has earned a nomination for Best Male Supporting Role for his praised portrayal of Sesto in Handel’s "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" at the 2025 Salzburg Festival, in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm.

The winners will be announced on September 8.

Following his Salzburg Festival appearances, Michael Spyres joins the NDR Radiophilharmonie for the 2026 Hannover Klassik Open Air, one of Germany’s largest outdoor classical music events.

Under the baton of chief conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky, Michael Spyres performs alongside mezzo-soprano Caterina Piva and baritone Ludovic Tézier in two gala concerts this evening and tomorrow in Hanover’s Maschpark.

The program features highlights from some of opera’s most beloved works, including Bizet’s "Carmen" and "Les pêcheurs de perles", Saint-Saëns’ "Samson et Dalila", Massenet’s "Werther", Cilea’s "Adriana Lecouvreur", Verdi’s "Nabucco", "Otello and Rigoletto", and Puccini’s "Tosca".

Tomorrow’s concert will be streamed live on ARTE Concert, and 3sat will broadcast a recording on September 27, 2026.

Toi, toi, toi to Kangmin Justin Kim, who makes his Australian debut this evening as Hansel in State Opera South Australia’s new production of "Hansel and Gretel" at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide.

Kangmin Justin Kim has both Hansel and the Witch in his repertoire. His performance as Hansel at The Dallas Opera earned him the company’s Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year Award.

Directed by Constantine Costi and conducted by Dane Lam, the production features the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Other performances follow on August 25, 27 and 29.
