Our Practice Sunday. 🌿

Zazen, service, practicing tea ceremony, samu, and sharing lunch together — simply spending a day in practice and community.

But this Sunday was a special one: our last Practice Sunday together with Koryu this year. She is now on her way to her Ango at La Gendronnière in France.

We wish her a wonderful and deeply enriching time of practice. All our best for your Ango, Koryu! 🙏

And we’ll be looking forward to welcoming her back. 🍵

Early in the morning, zazen, followed by my first workshop: “Chasen ichimi”—“Tea and Zen are one”—an ancient Japanese saying that brings together my two favorite topics —Zen and tea—because the history of Japanese tea is inextricably linked to Zen. The monk Saigo, who founded the first Tendai temple on Mount Hiei where Dogen Zenji began practicing Zen, brought the first tea from China to Japan in the 8th century; and then, in the 12th century, Eisai brought the tea plants that blossomed into the first tea garden in Uji, all the way to Obaku Chan who greatly influenced Zen in Japan in the 16th–17th centuries, and the famous monk Baisao, who popularized sencha in Kyoto.
You can book this workshop directly with us at shinkoko.at or on October 3 and 4 at the Vienna Tea Festival.

The 1000 Hands House is now the Daijihi House. The 1000 Hands Association is now Daijihi; our mission remains the same—only the name has changed. Daijihi is an officially recognized Buddhist association and a member of the Austrian Buddhist Religious Community.
You can read about what we’ve already accomplished over the past two years in our first impact report. Link in bio.

Back home from Japan and sitting with the Sangha, opening all the gifts I brought back—what a joy!

We always love coming back to Shogakuji❤️🙏🏻 Unfortunately, Yuko Yamada wasn’t there this time, but Hojun Szpunar led a zazenkai and gave a talk. We also received a lovely gift from him—more on that when we’re back in Vienna. Many temples in Japan are having to close, but Shogakuji is expanding and will be getting a s**o modeled after Dogen’s!
