YOUR PRAYER OF HOPE
Psalm 37[a]
Of David.

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.

7 Be still before the Lord
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy peace and prosperity.

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword
and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.

16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the Lord upholds the righteous.

18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,
and their inheritance will endure forever.
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish:
Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
but those he curses will be destroyed.

23 The Lord makes firm the steps
of the one who delights in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,
for the Lord upholds him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;
their children will be a blessing.[b]

27 Turn from evil and do good;
then you will dwell in the land forever.
28 For the Lord loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.

Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed[c];
the offspring of the wicked will perish.
29 The righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it forever.

30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,
and their tongues speak what is just.
31 The law of their God is in their hearts;
their feet do not slip.

32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
intent on putting them to death;
33 but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
or let them be condemned when brought to trial.

34 Hope in the Lord
and keep his way.
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing like a luxuriant native tree,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
though I looked for him, he could not be found.

37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright;
a future awaits those who seek peace.[d]
38 But all sinners will be destroyed;
there will be no future[e] for the wicked.

39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

If you live a godly life, you will be persecuted. You can count on this. It is not a matter of if; it is a matter of when and how much.

We love to claim the promises of God. We love to claim His promises of provision and protection. But how many of us have claimed this promise: "Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution" (2 Timothy 3:12)? I haven't. Who likes to be persecuted?

Yet Jesus said, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you" (Matthew 5:10-11).

In all the other beatitudes, the word "blessed" is used once, but in this particular beatitude, Jesus used the word "blessed" twice to emphasize the generous blessing given by God to the persecuted.

Righteousness, by its very nature, is confrontational. The very fact that you believe in Jesus bothers some people, because Jesus said, "For everyone practising evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed" (John 3:20).

People give a lot of excuses as to why they are not Christians, but I would say the real reason people do not come to Christ is they don't want their evil deeds exposed. They don't want to admit they are sinners.

You are a representative of Christ. And the reality is that if you follow Jesus, then you will face persecution. Because "all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution."

Goodbye 2013, hello 2014: Mars Hill year-end update

When the Lord Jesus says things like, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35), he wants the idols in our hearts, not the money in our wallets. Pastor Mark has preached about this very thing in his Living for a Legacy series through Malachi. God takes offense when we offer him lame, sick, polluted offerings. We believe this at Mars Hill and want God to take pleasure in us and accept the offering from our hands (Mal. 1:10). We want that for all believers—to experience the blessing of giving and being on mission with Jesus as he builds his church, his legacy.

Jesus has been so gracious to Mars Hill Church. We can’t believe what he has allowed us to do by his grace and provision. Because of generous and faithful partners in the gospel, both the local and Extended Family of Mars Hill, we have beaten our budget by $1.3 million! Thank you, Jesus, and thank you to those who have given. We have been so glad to invest that margin back into our church family’s needs. We have seen five of our churches find permanent homes and we have spent countless hours preparing for a January 12, 2014 official launch date for our brothers and sisters. We have had the privilege to baptize almost 1100 people in 2013! We have witnessed Jesus’ name being glorified through many baby dedications, weddings, marriage reconciliations, and new family members. We have seen growth and maturity in our Mars Hill family that really is a gift to us from Christ Jesus because we know that, “it is God who works in [us], both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13).

The work Jesus did in 2013 was amazing, but we know there’s much more to do in 2014. Mars Hill is praying for $2 million in contributions above and beyond normal tithes to be given by the end of the year. There are only a few more days left in 2013 that you can give toward the mission of Jesus as he makes disciples and plants churches through Mars Hill. This will go to fund many exciting endeavors in 2014, including the five church plant/replants, the Jesus Festival, Mars Hill Schools, and supporting 30 additional church planters in Ethiopia and India. The opportunity to give and then watch God use those gifts to reach many is one of the greatest blessings I’ve experienced. Please pray and ask God if he would have you support Jesus’ work here at Mars Hill. If you feel led to give, please TEXT (see below) or go to marshill.com/give before December 31, so it goes toward our end-of-year 2013 $2 million goal. We are praying that 2014 will be our most evangelistic year in the history of Mars Hill Church—will you please pray with us?

It's all about Jesus, and Mars Hill Church exists to make disciples and plant churches in his name.
